Some time ago i got given a Canon 450d and then later some nikon lenses. I like the canon but much prefer my mates Nikon. Not sure what model number, i think it might be a d80.

Using the canon it feels flimsey in the hand and not as solid as the nikon. It feels like a toy! When i used my mates nikon it felt 'right'. Loved how it felt and liked the layout of the buttons etc.

Should i concentrate on practising with the canon (which i am not fussy about) or should i go and buy a Nikon (it would have to be 2nd hand though).

Nikon d80 is a "semi-pro" camera whereas Canon 450D is an entry level one. Try to compare Nikon D80 to Canon 50D for instance, I doubt you'll find it toy-ish

If you have Nikon lenses and prefer Nikon bodies, I think this is a no-brainer!

Find out what your 450 is worth and see what Nikon kit you could afford. I think the D70 (older) and D90 (newer) should handle like a D80. All are decent.

Best deals are done buying and selling privately as dealers need to make a profit and have VAT to deal with. However, dealers should offer a warranty (6 months from MPB, for example) which offsets the higher cost.

'nowt wrong with second hand. Most of my lenses I bought from here and they've all been fine.

Gunnar makes a fine point. I don't know my Canon model numbers!

And you are looking for answers?

Think i will save up for a Nikon. It does feel 'right' compared to the canon.

In which case get a body with a motor: D70, D80, D90, D7000 etc.

Don't get a D3000, D5000 etc. But you wouldn't get one of these anyway as they are smaller toy-like bodies!

So you quite like the Canon, but you also like the Nikon?
But which is best?
There's only one way to find out.
Fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight!

Why does everyone seem to forget the D50 which also has the motor?

What lenses do you have for the Canon and what are the Nikon lenses?

Only have the kit lens for the canon. Not exactly sure on Nikon lenses as never looked at them closely. They are in my aunts house and not had a chance to go look as she lives miles away!! All i know is that my uncle used to use them with his D80 which is no longer with us!

D80 was/is still a great camera but not semi-pro, the D200 was the semi-pro model and the one which to compare to the xxd's..

at the consumer enthusiast end I have always felt Nikon had the edge build quality wise, I too had a 450d and a capable camera yes but it is very plasticky, I had a cheapo 3rd party grip attached and the build quality of that felt better than the camera.

?? No mention of the D300 ?? Magnesium alloy body and non of the artsy scene modes - just what's required for a great camera. I also own a Nikon D70, Canon 350D and 550D.

Go with the one you feel most comfortbale in using. At the end of the day the longer you can (and enjoy holding it) the more shots you will take.

Go for the Nikon if that's what you prefer. If it feels better to you you're more likely to want to actually use it. You could probably sell the 450D for £200-250 which would easily cover the cost of a Nikon body.
In terms of lenses you'll easily find what you need for both manufacturers, but also if your friends have Nikon's you might be able to borrow some of theirs as well.

Yea, the use of my mates lenses plus the Nikon feels right for me is what is swinging it towards Nikon.

People, as you know, i have my Canon 450D and several Nikon lenses. I have used a Nikon and do prefer it over the Canon. Now, my mate has offered to buy the Canon off of me for £250. Is that a good price it?

I could then look for a Nikon.

I think the answer to your question is simple: If £250 gives you enough to go and buy a good used Nikon then it's a good price. You'll certainly get a D50/70 for that and may well get a D80, although the D90 will be outside of that budget unless you can put some more to it.

Check eBay for recently sold 450Ds and see what they sold for.

Go for it. You'd only need to add another £100 to that to be able to pick up a secondhand D200, which is an awesome camera.

I think I'd go for it if I were in your shoes. £250 is an OK price for a 450D and would cover the purchase of something like a Nikon D70 or D80.
