gorrilla pods

I got one free with a magazine subscription.

They are ok, my kids use it with a Fuji s5500, works well for them, its great that it can be wrapped around things like posts, branches etc to offer more support.
 
I watched a guy attaching one to a metal rail fence while I was waiting at traffic lights, he was still trying to get it steady when I moved off again. Handy but not much use for grab shots I think, find a handy tree to lean against.
 
Bear in mind there are two sizes, a compact size and one for DSLR's. I assume the SLR size only takes so much too. So don't expect to be hanging a 1d and 600mm off it :D
 
There are now three sizes.

Compact, SLR, and SLR zoom .

I have the SLR one that i used quite a lot in Prague with the G7. I have even attached it to my bike handlebars with a Fuji F31 on it with no problems :eek:

Some people use them for attaching flashes to stuff too.
 
I have an SLR zoom version. It's fine for what I want. The SLR zoom has no quick release top like the SLR and the mini one, so you'll need a quick release mount otherwise it's too cumbersome. I bought a cullman quick shoe off ebay for about a fiver. It's great, if I want a quick steady shot just whip the gorillapod out and slide the camera on.

Shop around if you want one though, a lot of places are still retailing them at the RRP of around £50. I got one for £32 about 3 weeks ago off an on-line retailer, www.lowpricememory.co.uk
 
I was in Wilkinsons cameras a month or so ago, and the salesman was demonstrating it to a customer. He had what looked like a Nikon D 400 and a zoom atached, and he wrapped it round a metal shelf support. A few seconds later, it fell to the floor with an expensive sounding crash. I left the shop, and nearly p*ssed myself laughing:lol:

Oddly, I saw it coming, and was going to advise the salesman, but as my good lady says, don't interfere!:lol:

I like the flash idea, that's nifty.

How about reflectors and things like that...might be handy for that too :D

has anyone used gorillapod original for tz3? it says max weight 275gms and tz3 is just that.
 
I bought the zoom model to take on my hols. And very useful it turned out to be.
The shot below was taken with it clamped to the balcony rail. the lens was only 24-70
But I would not trust it with anything larger.

I recently bought a gorillapod, but I can't seem to find the quick shoe you reference - could you provide a link to an ebay auction selling one please?
 
I bought one for to use with a compact digital because I got fed-up trying to find vertical tree and lampposts (no a lot of them are vertical).

Good to splay the legs out and hols against tree/lamppost so you can get the camera vertical. Not a serious tripod though. Mine snapped apart below the camera fixing and when I pushed it back, it wasn't as tight as before. Put a sheet of paper in it.

Overall I find it converient to carry in my jacket pocket and occassionally use as a quick support when you cannot find anything vertical to place the camera against.

I also take the shot using the timer. Gives the camera time to settle after pusing the shutter.
 
Does anyone know if an SLR version will support a 450d with a 55-250mm lens?

It says it supports up to 800g, and the above is apparently about 865g (busted scales at the mo so I just got those weights off t'internet)...

I'm thinking maybe they under-advertise the recommended weight??

It's only 65g (ish!) over...

I just checked the weight for you on the 450d + 55-250 + battery and SD Card, it's 940g
 
Go for the "SLR zoom" version...a little more expensive but will support about 3kg's sensibly distributed (as a tripod but not sure about wrapping the legs around signposts). The base version only held about 750gms.

I have the SLR-zoom version and I had my 20d +bg + 300 f4L on it before, and with the weight properly distrobuted it held it in place.

I find it very sturdy (Sony a300 and Sigma 70-300mm APO)
Have used it with other combinations, including my ex 400D and 70-300mm IS USM, which was a heavy old beast. Still sturdy as you like!

This shot was taken using it wrapped around the head rest on the passenger seat!

 
i have the big version, i'm not sure which one it is, but it's the biggest one they sold at the time which was about 4 months ago. the legs just collapse every time i put my 1D on it.......

i like the idea of using it for a flash though!
 
I've got two.

One is a third party SLR one, and a studier Joby SLR one (looks exactly the same but the joints feel stiffer).

I use them for holding flashes here and there.
 
I've got the SLR Zoom version, it comes in handy at times :)
 
my son got me one for xmas but hardly used it more a toy than anything serious ps dont tell him i said that the thought was there
 
SLR Zoom one holds a D200 with a Sigma 170-500 steady as a tripod - been a bit busy recently so not had a chance to have a longer play. Mine's got a Manfrotto ball head on top for easier positioning and to allow QR compatibility with mono and tripods.

just doing a search on Gorillapod, having seen it on another thread

anyone got a pic of it in action? (i know a bit strange, cos the dlsr would be on it, but someone might have a P&S or phone camera taken pic)

Not the best of pics, I stuck a ballhead on it and tried the heaviest load I could and so an old heavy metal lens was stuck on.
 
Was given a slr zoom one for xmas, might be handy for long exposures (better than sitting the camera on a wall etc). It holds a 450D & 55-250 IS just fine, but might look into putting a ballhead & quick release on it if I find I use it often.
 
I've had the SLR Zoom since it came out and use it exclusively for night shots when I can't find a brick wall or other 'natural' support, never had any issues with it and holds my D90 with a reasonable lens such as a Sigma 10-20 or Sigma 20mm 1.8 with no problems.

Considering most of my night shots are taken when on holiday with the other half, it's a great compromise as I can carry it around easily and still enjoy the actual holiday side of things. I have had a few negative comments from the snobbish photographer types (and several nice comments from the general public, especially in Venice), but it does the job for me and can often get some interesting angles that any tripod would struggle with.

Particularly good for places like this:

...where the machine gun holding security team appeared to be having serious issues with the tripod crowd, but left me well alone.
 
Our local ASDA is still doing the SLR version for £16.67 (reduced from £29.99), have 2 or 3 in stock :)
