thinking of getting one or my travels,

Small, light and fairly versatile. Anyone had experience of one of these.

How do they hold up against using a 'proper' tripod.

If not, can amyone recommend a tipod for travelling. Needs to be small and lightweight.

Thnks
Greg

never used one but i am intrigued, mostly i use my tripod as a light stand, only occasionally to shoot from, and i think a gorilla pod would make an immense lightstand, I shall be watching this thread with great interest

I got one of the bigger ones, if i remember will report back on it!

Carl.

Be gratefull if you could post your opinion on it.

It just has a look about it that makes me suspicious of the claims.

Just had a play with one in jessops, they look like they would be ideal for travelling. Even if you need a bit of height you can attach it to a chair, railing, car roof etc

Got to be easier than carrying a great big tripod......

Great for flashes but the camera can be a bit heavy for it. It all depends on what you plan to stick on it!

I've got an SLR Zoom one and it does what I want it to! I doubt it would be much good in anything more than a light breeze in tripod mode but with its legs wrapped around something sturdy it'll be steady enough. In dead calm (indoors, on carpet), I did an 8 second exposure as a test, using a Sigma 170-500 on a D200 - not a hint of movement.

If I had unlimited space and weight allowance, I would take a "proper" tripod but as a travel one, I reckon the bigger Gorillapods are a good bet. You'll probably want a head though - getting the camera level by adjusting the legs could get frustrating!

good point,

I saw on the package this small trigger typ head thing,

Anyone know anything about these?

The smallest GPod has a sort of QR device, is that what you mean?

I found the small ones could not support the weight of either my G9 or my external flash, but the bigger style one was very useful for the flash when I borrowed one off a mate.

I use mine quite allot. I've got the SLR zoom one, which I think is the biggest one there is.

As long as you make sure it is very secure (if wrapping it around a tree or similar) then it'll be fine.

If using it as a 'normal' tripod, then it fairs pretty well, even with a big zoom.
I have used mine on the window sill for moon shots, as the bed is too close to the window for a full size tripod.
You really need to make sure you get the balance right so it doesn't topple over, and out the window
And I always have the neckstrap around my neck, just in case..........

I've also used it in the car around the head rest pole, for slow shutter speed light trail shots.
Very effective!
