Gorillapod Focus - how strong really?

I've got a friend bringing me back a Gorillapod Focus (rated at 5kg) as they are cheaper on that side of the pond.

Does anyone have one and can you tell me if it's strong enough to hold something like a D3 with 28-70 in an emergency? Not expecting miracles but given a weight rating so high it should in theory easily support a camera and lens that weighs only half of that...

I have the SLR version of the Gorillapod.
It struggles to hold my G1 with 45-200 lens, if the lens is pointing towards the floor.

I know its not the one you have but its still a gorillapod.

Depends how you use it. As a stand alone tripod, possibly not but wrapped around something sturdy, then probably. I only have the SLR Zoom and find it's up to most things I want to use it for.

they gorrilapod focus is aimed at professional camcorders so im guessing it should hold a d3 with lens attached.

It will be fine, mine takes an eos 3d with 24 105 no prob at all, suspect it would still be fine with the 100 400 is lol, remember it is metal not plastic like the slr etc.

I couldn't decide between the Focus and SLRZoom models... ended up going for the Zoom... its pretty useless as a normal tripod as it sags under any real weight but for attaching to random things it does its job perfectly...

Thanks all. I'm heading to Croatia for a few days next month and wanted to try and squeeze in a few time lapse shots whilst there. Didn't fancy taking my Gitzo with me so hoping I can get away with this little fella...!

Thats quite amazing... thinking about one for myself while out with wildlife, wrap round trees and stuff, hmmm. Now to look at prices...
