Yes and yes, to a point. I have the SLR zoom version, and I wouldn't want to put my D60 + kit lens on anything lighter. It's no replacement for a proper tripod, but for something you can just chuck in your backpack and not worry about the weight it's great - out on a walk and spotted a nice waterfall that'd look great with a long exposure? No problem. Fancy mounting your off camera flash on a tree? Easy.

yeah, I bought a cheap £16 3KG copy off the bay and it arrived 20 minutes after yesterdays thunderstorm 
Had a play with it before work, it's very good, although it takes a bit of practice to make sure the camera is level

I could of done with one of these last week when I was away on holiday!

yeah i bought one last week, for going on holiday in 3 weeks, as i didnt fancy the idea of lugging my resnapper about!!
It's a bit fiddly to position level, but i might just pop my redsnapper ball head on it, to make it a bit easier, im sure it will come in handy.
