Anyone on here got a GoPro (or similar)?

Looking at the basic Hero, which can be purchased from Argos for just £94! However, the lack of a LCD Screen on the back is a bit off putting, and I'm not sure if I can/want to justify the extra cost just for a screen.

We are going to America for our wedding in 2018, 10 days Vegas, 10 days driving through Utah, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona and back to Vegas (this may be trimmed down), then off to Chicago for a few days, before finishing off in NYC for about 5 days. I was going to take my camera, and a dash cam for the driving - but decided against the dash cam and probably shoot some time lapse (which a GoPro can do).

Anyway, we have now booked ANOTHER America trip, back to NYC next August. So I'm thinking of getting a GoPro for that - to "practice" before the big wedding trip. At around £194 for a Hero+ LCD, I'm not sure if I'd use it enough to warrant the cost - then again, I don't want to not have a screen and run the risk of not getting the footage I want.

Thoughts?
 
Can you borrow one for trying out over here? After that, I would suggest that you should buy one out in USA (cheaper) and also buy one as near as possible to your event so that you get the best and most current spec available / the best price.
You have some great adventures ahead of you - enjoy them and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.
Off topic - but I would strongly recommend that you spend a couple of nights in either Zion or Bryce National Park whilst in the Vegas area - absolutely superb for trekking and exploring.
 
We plan on seeing Zion as it's en route (if we do indeed do Utah and Colorado).

This will be my 3rd trip to NYC and the other half's 5th! We also did Vegas last year, which was my first and her 3rd. As part of last years trip, we did NYC, Vegas and then drove to Arizona, stayed a few days and drove back to Vegas for another week :D

Will definitely try and get one over here to borrow - I know what you mean about buying over there. I bought some Beats Studio 2 from NYC last year, they cost the same in USD as they would in GBP, (the website literally just changed the currency symbol), so with the exchange, it obviously worked out to be cheaper.
 
Can't remember if the cheap GoPro 4 has wifi....if it has wifi you don't need a screen link it to app on phone and there's your screen/view finder!! All I suggest is buy spare batteries and don't hold out on amazing quality for photos as its a action camera

As Snooky said, buy spare batteries and a car charger or get something like the USB battery packs that can charge phones and tablets if you want to use your phone as a screen or do timelapse away from a power source and perhaps something like a gorillapod to hold the GoPro so you can fix it anywhere.

Ive got a hero 3 and use my phone to check what I'm looking at. Awesome little camera which is great fun. Would suggest looking at the next one up as imho the lcd screen doesn't add much.

As far as action cams go then It's hard to beat them. The amount of accessories available to bolt them on to various bits is mind boggling. I have a Hero 3 Black which didnt have a screen, but we didn't miss it.

If you ever pop it in the water then i'd recommend the floaty orange back. I lost my first go-pro day one as I thought my wrist strap would be enough. Big wave & byebye GoPro! The orange back lets you find it if you ever lose your grip!

The fish eye effect is significant and also the lens is very wide. Just thought I should point this out not trying to put you off

Yeh thats true. On ours there are 3 settings for the FOV to close it up a bit, but I still run it through the lens profiles on Lightroom to clean it up!
 
I'm taking my GoPro 3+ to Spain Thursday for a week!! Aiming for some beach time lapses with it while I free hand my Nikon for other pictures! If I remember I'll upload my results from the GoPro and stick a link in this thread if it helps for abit of insight
 
Where's the best place to get a SJ4000 from? Seems like a better price for the amount I'll use it.
 
My son has a Go Pro Hero. Because the Lens has such a wide angle it does capture most things you point it at. However there are times when a screen would be useful. You only get once chance to capture that trip so I would bite the bullet and pay the extra and get the LCD. I would imagine by 2018 there will be new models. Good Luck whatever you do.

I have a Sony AS30v and prefer to the Hero 3 Silver I had previously, I prefer its features, the smartphone app, and I really like the video quality. I also prefer the way it mounts to my helmet, shoulder, wrist strap and selfie stick.. I had to get used to it protruding out a bit more on the chest mount compared to the GoPro but its a very minor niggle.

BTW All of them except the cheapest model (the GoPro Hero) work with the GoPro App, so you can use your mobile as your viewscreen.
 
I have a Hero4 Black, brilliant cam, but maybe a bit over the top price wise, for what you want, I can recommend the SJ4000 though, as long as you get a genuine one, not a copy.

Yes, it is very easy for timelapse videos - the SJ4000 retains all the photos taken and then you compile the timelapse movie in an external program, there are lots of of tutorials on Youtube, for example (bit longwinded) see here
