I already have a 5, the hypersmooth looks good though. It will be for videos around the house/days out/holidays not extreme sports.

For £300 I can get a hero 7 black through work, or I can get the karma grip for £230 refurb from GoPro.

Which would you choose to make better videos? I’m leaning towards a 7 so then I have 2 cameras and my daughter can use one but I don’t know how useable it would be

DJI osmo pocket for me, certainly wouldn’t be spending £230 on the karma with the alternatives out there, loads of gimbals for go pro less than £150 Feiyu G5 for example.

I’ve looked at the osmo but I already have lots of mounts and I want to take it to the beach and in the sea too, I know the karma grip can’t do that but the 7 hypersmooth can and I like the karma grip because all the buttons are on the handle and it would give me an excuse to keep the 5, I will look at some other gimbals though, thank you

I'm also a Hero 5 Black owner, considering the upgrade to a Hero 7 Black, purely for the hypersmooth stabilization.

Ive watched many video reviews and comparisons on YouTube and hypersmooth video is the only reason I can find to upgrade.

HOWEVER: the first couple of videos (ignoring the official gopro marketing nonsense) made a clear case to upgrade and I was sold; until I watched some more randomly. And then it became more difficult to justify it.

I think it comes down to what you want to film. There's a vid of a chap in a hotel who goes running along a beach which looks like a huge improvement, but the one I saw of it on a mountain bike made hardly any difference and I'd be disappointed in the investment.
I'm also thinking a gimbal is the way to go seeing as the Hero 5 is a pretty good bit of kit anyway.

If choice must be karma grip or Hero7 I'd say go for the H7, you are getting (subtle but real) improvements in video quality as well a class leading stabilisation.
I have the Hero 4 and find it hard work to get reliable good results. Not entirely convinced the newer versions are as good as is being touted as we hear it all before.
With the H4 battery life is appalling and it likes to secretly crash while appearing to be recording.
In short I wouldn't have another gopro, and am currently enjoying the optical stabilisation using a grey import Sony X3000 (also about £300)

I think I’m just going to get a 7 like you say, I got a GoPro sleeve for £10 so my daughter can use the 5, i would’ve preferred the fusion but I don’t have the computer power to edit that, according to YouTube it takes forever.

I will only be recording in 1080 and I already have 3 batteries so it makes sense to stick to what I have for me personally, the karma grip wouldn’t be very useful at the beach or in the sea but hypersmooth would be so I think I’ve decided, thanks all

I agree. I think the Hero7 is the better option. I have one, a Karma grip and an Osmo Pocket. Each has its merits, but IME the H7 is the oval winner.

The Karma grip is big, and a bit fiddly to put the GP on and off quickly, you also run the risk of losing the door (they aren't cheap). There are better, cheaper alternatives, but none that are as integrated as well as the Karma.

The Osmo Pocket seems like a good idea on paper, but ive found the stabilisation to be a bit poor if walking around. Lots of bobbing up and down. The H7 is much smoother, especially in good light. The OP also suffers from a poor AF system. Lots of focus pumping. Again, the H7 has no focusing issues as its always in focus. The Osmo can get a half decent background blur though, which is nice as long as the focus is on the correct part of the scene. Not always easy to see on the tiny screen.
The OP only does one speed of slow mo and doesn't do hyperlapse very well. Also timelepase is very limited as well.

The Hypersmooth and stabilisation on the H7 is pretty amazing considering its digital. it also has a lot more settings to play with if needed, and the larger rear screen makes doing this easier (just like the H5, only the menus are a bit neater). no worries about AF, and of course its great for beach holidays etc.
