In my never ending quest to network and become more visible as a Photographer I've ventured onto Google+.

From what I've seen it looks great and there are many articles outlining the benefits to photographers such as better IQ on uploaded photographs than the likes of Facebook.

So, with that in mind, does anyone here use it and find it at all beneficial for networking and/or generating work?

Cheers.

Ps - 1000th post. And my teachers said I'd never achieve anything :)

The best way to maximise traffic to your website is to "embrace" all the main social media sites and have a presence on them all - fb, twitter, g+,Pinterest, flickr at least

Yeah I'm quite well established on Facebook and Flickr. Dipped my toe into Instagram recently. Twitter doesn't seem to hold much value for me. And I don't even pretend to understand Pinterest :)

To me, Google+ seems to be a nice mix of them all.

I can say that the only benefit I've gained from Google+ is an improvement in page rank.

I'm not saying it can't work. But all my contacts there are also much more active on other networking sites.

I signed up a personal account ages back. I really like the way it works, but with no one else I know using it I soon lost interest.

I have recently created a business page, basically everything I post on facebook I also post on G+ in the hope that it will help my rankings which it seems to be, but don't expect anything from it directly.

Twitter, hate it with a passion but still try to use it anyway.

Yeah I can see this maybe being a slow burner.

Am I right in thinking that Google give you a little bump in the rankings just for having a Google+ page and linking it to your website?

Hold the phone....I had no idea there were business pages and personal pages. I have the feeling mines just personal - I don't remember being offered the choice when I signed up to be honest.

Yeah twitter isn't really doing it for me either - full of celebs having mock rows and folk taking pictures of their dinners.

Yes.
If you google your fave search term, you'll see all the top 'local' sites have google + and/or google maps entries.

Just remember Google loves google.

I have created a personal one and one for my website. I have to agree with the above - I've seen few benefits outside of page ranking. However, that is enough to warrant me using it. They offered me the 'proper' url registration very early on which was nice. I'm not sure how I feel about the whole site to be honest but as it's run by Google, it'll will inevitably be important at some stage.

You can find me here if you're on it.

Cheers Robbie. A proper URL would be nice as I think that's what SmugMug use to get the Google+ social icon on your homepage. I'll just have to keep posting and bide my time for that.

I'll look you up too.

This is exactly what I've been hearing, and the only reason I'm on it.

I have a personal and business page, though I'm not sure they're much different, other than I can get followers on my personal page but struggle to get them on the business one.

I have a mere 7 followers, all wedding supplies or venues, and 51 +1's. Not sure if there is anything useful I can get from that, I currently don't have access to the business insights as I am still waiting for my verification pin to arrive.

Thanks for the follows guys. I'm following back.

I tell you what, I did some manual testing today with keywords and Google searches. My articles that I link on Google+ usually out rank the direct article by quite a few results. I didn't realise how good G+ was for Google search climbing. I'm going to try to be more active.

ETA: When you post something, make sure you add hashtags and that those hashtags are keywords that someone might search for on Google.

Much the same as others I mainly have a Google+ site for the potential page ranking benefits it can bring, I'm not sure if it does as I've put a lot of time in getting a decent page rank though.

Personally I'm not a big fan of its functionality, I find it rather "clunky" and don't think it's that well setup as a networking site
