Morning all,

I've just got myself a nice Google Pixel 7 Pro mobile phone.

On my old Samsung, I had the Google Pay app and had a card registered against it. It worked well.

Now the only offering is Google Wallet which is the same principle.

My question is this - when I set it up and checked the settings, it was defaulted to being able to use it when the phone is actually locked.

I cannot think for the life of me, why anyone would want that option as you'd be able to be targeted by someone with a card reader, surely?

Unless i'm missing something?

Anyone had that same scenario and can tell me a positive for that setting, as i've turned that off?

I believe the setting allows you to use the app when the phone is locked. However, to actually pay (or see card details) you need to authenticate.

So from the locked lock screen I can launch Wallet, I select the card I want to pay with, authenticate and then pay. This is on a Pixel 6 - I'll bet the 7 is the same.

It also asks you to auth even if the phone is unlocked (for example if you use unlock when carried etc).

Google wallet will allow contactless payments up to £30 ( i think) without unlocking the phone
You only need to unlock the phone if the payment is higher. You can change the settings to only allow payment when the phone is unlockecd

Thanks Tony. I did change it to having to open it but I may change it back if there is only a £30 limit

Interesting possibility, didn't know about it. For purchases over £30 will I need to enter a pin/unlock my phone? For security purposes, I set up payments only when my phone is unlocked.
