Hi.

Well Google maps has launched its street view for the UK, only the major cities and outskirts so far. pretty good, its how i have spent this afternoon at work anyway.

when you go to google maps, drag that little person (above the magnify bar) over the uk and you will see what parts are available.

Chris

p.s. sorry if this is a repost, couldnt see anything saying this.

It's on Google Earth too.

They've got my street on it too and my Aunts house.

Since when did Scunthorpe become a city. :suspect:

sorry... not just cities..

really clever, and interesting.

Been waiting for this to kick off, remember seeing the camera car drive pass my house last September

From our local paper;

"SCUNTHORPE is well and truly on the map after boffins at Google created a virtual version of town for a cutting-edge online atlas.
The town is the only one in the country to be featured on Google's new Street View service, joining an exclusive club of 24 major cities including London, Birmingham, Cardiff and Edinburgh.
It means Internet users can now take a virtual stroll through the area from the comfort of their home with a map which stitches together panoramic photographs of every street.
A spokesman for Google said there was 'no scientific formula' for deciding which places would be part of yesterday's UK launch.
He said: "It is just where it was operationally possible, where it was easy to stick the images together and where we got enough useful imagery."

:D

Someone just sent a link to me, of a bloke standing outside my place of work having a fag, that looks suspiciously like me !!!! - I've just spent the last half hour trying to remember if i've been at work with no tie recently......... Freaky.

This could blast the spotted a togger thread wide open

that must be worrying seeing yourself being spied on.... :) the photo from outside my work is at least 6 months old, as i have changed car since then,

clever piece of technology...just thinking about all the fuss recently regarding police etc trying to stop people taking photos of public areas/buildingd doesn't this completely blow all that out of the water...o.k the images are slightly out of date but they certainly provide a very good insight into the layout/location of some major buildings etc

Just saw a report on the news, they are saying it invades privacy, I'm not suprised at the reaction.

Thought it was well funny thought that they havent blurred the face on a guy walking out of a sex shop

Personally I think its awesome :D

Its amazing!!! Is it just done by driving around with a few cameras on the roof?

Theyve blurred out most faces now (Although Ive spotted a few unblurred ones).
And reg plates too.

It does feel kinda wierd tbh, purely because of the mass scale of it.

PS. Anyone found any smokin hotties yet? :D

Un blurred reg plate on a taxi on fleet street! west bound if you wanna look too :p

My car is on there, parked near my house :D
The registration is blurred out, and so it a street signpost nearby, but the map tells you what street your on, so whats that all about. Must explore it some more!

It's got my sisters address in London but Not Inverness yet, might be interesting though as I was out cutting the grass when the googleguy came past.

Main item on Newsnight, starting now, BBC2.

Sadly, I wasn't surprised either, but then thought "Privacy my bottom" - Makes me chuckle when people start bleating about innovations like this. It's amazing how many cctv cameras the same people walk past every day without batting an eyelid.....

The bloke that might be me (still not sure about that one) in Leadenhall Street is directly under one of the Lloyds Building CCTV cameras, and in sight of the one on the Bank over the road.

As togs we're all doomed if some poor misguided judge declares that it is an invasion of privacy, as the long standing adage that you can't expect privacy when you're in a public place will cease to exist

Despite my worries about the bleaters, I think it's brilliant - I can tell all my mates I've been to Scunthorpe now !

Wonder when they'll get round to doing my area......

I saw one of the google cars passing Crystal Palace Bus Station one day and thought there was only one appropriate response! I duly gave it a 'V' sign!!!

My wife used to work in Manchester, one day she was looking out of the window and saw a prozzie giving a bloke a BJ in an alley, I wonder if they blur those faces out :D

Out of all the major towns and cities they've done, the inclusion of Scunthorpe has raised a few eyebrows and chuckles. But they've caught my (our) mother, sister and her husband on it.

Big brother is watching you...

Or should it be every b*ggers brother and sister and aunt and uncle and mum and dad are watching you ? :p

When it goes through Liverpool at least they'll be able to see who nicked the wheels off the Corsa...

I did hear on the radio today that google are getting complaints about invasion of privacy and some images have had to be withdrawn including:

- a man being sick on the pavement

- a man coming out of an adult shop in Soho!

Yeah, you can report any image (link in the corner of the photo) and they will look at it and delete it if they think there is any possibility of it being iffy, so all the fun ones people find over the next few days will be deleted because someone will report them.

I wonder how many TP members have been caught on camera?!

....

he should be charged with wasting good beer....

people are going to complain just because they can - so all the photos of the police, government buildings, airports, council buildings cars on double yellow lines, cars running a red light, people talking on a phone whilst driving, good looking girls and ugly girls will be removed....
leaving a road map :bang::bang:

not forgetting all the photos of all the CCTV cameras that have been captured on film

any kids playing in public places will be removed - in fact why didn't google just remove all the people, cars and buildings...

then there will be collections of "removed photos" on flickkkker (etc)

so before all the fun stops lets find some good photos before they all go

Haha, we used to see that regularly when I worked at BT. Just the other side of the carpark was a little alleyway where we'd regularly see hookers and their, er, 'customers'.

My picture is on it twice. Outside my house and outside work, not at the same time, obviously. I wonder what is the record for the number of appearances of the same person?

Maybe Google fell foul of the Police by taking pictures of them :D

I don't get what all the fuss is about. They've just captured images that anyone could have seen had they been there at that time, so why all the complaining?

Well I drove in front of a Google Astra the other day for about 1/2 mile before it turned off so I should be on it :D

I don't know how we, as photographers, could be anything other than behind the project. If anything it should highlight that photography from a public place is legal and benefit all of us.

I agree with it in principle. I think it's the huge scale of it, and the fact that it's a publically acccessible, searchable database of everywhere...that makes me (and others) feel uncomfortable.

I have no problems with my photo being on the net anywhere btw, I'm a bit of a floozy when it comes to that :D

I just feel a little uneasy about my own residence being captured and searchable on the net (Its not btw, not yet I suppose, but one day....)

However, I do think that it's perfectly legal and theyre entitled to do it....Just the scale of it.....

I don't really see the issue here. People can search for your house the same way they can using a map, the only difference is they have a picture of it, which they can get by turning up at your house and taking a picture with a camera.

to all in case you have not tried it -

google

"my postcode"
or

"my short address"

or

"my firstname space secondname"

there is already lots of info on YOU (all of us) on the web already, we all defend the right to take photos in a public places - why are people having a go at google - if enough people complain then the law will be changed to restrict the right to take photos in a public places....:'(

look up 34 connaught square, london. Tony Blair's house. image has been removed, but if you go one click either side and rotate image either side you can see it!

They appear to have put it back in now. Maybe they twigged?
Or maybe they remembered that he actually lives at 29 Connaught Square.

If you didn't know which house Blair lived in, it's not to hard to work out - just look for the only house in the street with (a) no parking allowed outside it and (b) armed police outside the front door 24/7.
