It got me at first until I read it.
It's a token gesture to highlight something called 'Earth Hour'

Didn't I read somewhere that displaying black on an LCD consumes more energy than displaying white? Or is that for CFT screens? I can never remember

Its for CRT screens only. Google explain it on their Earth Hour page...That's why today is just a gesture rather than an effort to change something.

Its really cool out there - most people have actually gone to the effort of turning their lights off... its reassuring to see most people seem to care but looking at some copper choppers, I was just thinking how wicked London must look from up there. Aerial photography would be good, but alas only 5 minutes of the hour left.
