Google Earth - Any other fans on here?

I seem to spend a hell of a lot of time just looking around different places on google earth, I find it a massive amount of fun if that's the right word...and it leads me to all sorts of random web finds..

Such as this website with a load of photos from a Ukrainian tank grave yard...

Which feeds my fascination with abandoned places, military kit and of course photography :P

So any other google earth fans out there?
 
I use it to find remote beaches on Crete. The resolution is usually good enough to see if there are any cars parked up nearby - and if it's possible to get a car there, the locals will - they don't walk any further than absolutely necessary! Handy (at street view level) for finding addresses when Mrs Nod is doing private lessons (hen parties are a good earner!!!).

Yeah I use it and street view a lot it's very handy for checking out locations in advance
 
Use it all the time, often just randomly looking at places trying to find interesting things, or more recently checking out houses that we are looking into buying, checking the local area for interesting things etc.
The historic imagery function is very handy for that sort of thing, you can see the changes in the house over time, and how well kept it look.

Was on there all last night looking at a house we are interested in and also checking out the area for walks and photo locations, plus finding the nearest pub.
 
I tend to use Google Maps more than Earth these days, just for the speed, but if I am just doing some "looking around" the layers in GE are just amazing :) I have been using it before Google purchased it (when it was Keyhole) and always get excited when I hear there is new imagery on it (how sad is that!).

There used to be a great forum for it too, but they recent shoved it onto some crappy Google Products forum thing and seem to have killed it. That used to have a great games sections, which was very geeky, where people would post a screenshot of something interesting somewhere and you had to go hunt for it. I spent a good week or so once searching the Isle Of White for an A-Z of things in the shape of the letters of the alphabet once. (again very sad!).

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one to just randomly look around...the random looking around causes me to google search and I end up in the most random of places on the net :D
 
I use it a lot. Partly just for fun but also finding locations for photography etc.

I use Street view for my work (my job) too.

:lol: sounds worryingly like the kind of thing I'd do, I'm sure I was a member of that forum you refer to, didn't it used to have user created layers you could download to GE that would bookmark different things like I did have one for USAF bases

Sure did :) (all the user added stuff is still there in the "Gallery" layer under "Google Earth Community", or something like that). Shame they seem to have killed it by moving it....unless they have done something else with it that I have missed.

I'll have a good look when I'm at the PC later :D try and work out what on earth I was using as my username all those years ago :eek: now there is a challenge to my mental capacity
 
I had a plug in that showed loads of secret bases and government installations. Had hours of fun looking at all those!

Stuff like that I love...you must have also spent a little bit of time on the secret bases website :lol:
 
It is a great little program, I use it to have a look at weather conditions around the world at a glance. Very useful.

Hi Matthew! You just tick the "Weather" box in the left pane. It comes as standard. You can even add cloud and rain radar on it.

This needs to be investigated on my part as I never knew that feature existed, could prove very useful :D
 
I used street view to look at a beach, weather was lovely but when I got there it was pouring with rain.
 
Collectively I must have lost weeks of my life to Google Earth, I love it. I use it for all sorts, getting the feel of somewhere before I visit, researching holidays, the weather overlay, planning running routes, the uses are endless.

My dad (deceased) used to love looking at maps and atlases and I can only imagine what he would have made of GE, it is an amazing tool.

I've not used it for a good number of years now. Installed it again just now and it's 10x better than I remember. I'm checking out my second home for over the winter :D Dahab in Egypt. I go over there to teach freestyle windsurfing and have a break from the UK weather.

My dad loves GE spends a lot of time on it fact when I was still on a restricted broadband service the month first discovered it he cost me a small fortune in excess downloads :eek:

I wasn't into photography the last time I worked out there. Can't wait to get out with the camera down there and it should make for some brilliant night shooting :D There's less ambient light there than that last star trail picture you helped me with.

[I've deleted this post. It was a hoax about somebody found on a desert island after 7 years using Google Earth.

Unfortunately there's something nasty on the site - just looking at it on FB makes you "like" it and it spreads like a virus.

Horrid stuff - sorry.]
