I frequently get emails from Google asking me to implement 2 stage sign in verification on my email accounts.
Security wise it probably makes sense, but it appears to involve the use of mobile phones. In view of the disruption caused by the O2 outage I am not inclined to risk the inconvenience of not being able to log in. Google say that back up verification by means of a 2nd phone can be set up. I have 3 phones using 3 different providers, but they all use the O2 network and would not have helped during the recent failure.

Anyone use 2 stage verification and find it trouble free ?
 
I've used it for a few years now and had no issues until I was in SE Asia in the summer when I had no access to my UK number for a code.

There was a workaround but I can't remember what...
 
I use the Google authenticator app for several online accounts, not had any bother (remember to save the recovery / backup codes somewhere safe).

I don't think you need a mobile signal specifically, wifi should do. I'm not even certain the authenticator needs Internet, it's just a time generated code based on the details used at creation.
 
You can generate back up codes to print out and keep safe

You don't; only battery power is needed. If you lose the phone hopefully you still have the 10 codes somewhere.

Also you have to make sure you don't get caught out when you reinstall or replace your phone. It helps to disable the verification to make sure you can still get back in afterwards.
 
I use Google’s MFA and have had zero issues, granted that a loss of cellular will cause you an issue when you don’t have WiFi either, but luckily I’ve not experienced that yet, although there are backup options for authentication available
