Goodbye Canon. Thats right daddio, I'm bad. I got me Mac and now I got me a Nikon. I'm one of them. But why? How? Why? For the love of god why?! I hear someone cry from the back of the room who doesn't know whats going on but wanted to join in. Well on Saturday my 30D's shutter died. £200 to fix. I was left with a 10D, 24-70, 10-20, 70-200 and a 50mm. I pre-ordered a 5dm2 back in September and that was meant to ship at the beginning of December, it didn't. It was then updated and meant to ship on the 11th and who knows if it would. So I thought to myself, to get back up and running I would need to spend £2200. 5d2 and 30D shutter. I needed the 30D for a shoot next week so I'd would have needed it fixed, £200. In an odd moment of clarity on Monday it hit me. D700 + 24-70 was around £2500. Only an extra £300.

Now I really liked the look of the 5d2. Brilliant camera. But 3.9fps was always going to be slower than the 5fps I was use to on the 30D. I could get used to it and planned to. But in my heart I wanted a Canon D700 and I have done for months. Everything was just so right, just what I wanted in a camera. So in a way the 30D breaking was liberating. If I had gone with the 5d2 I would have needed a new grip, batterys, and wide angle lens. Just as I would on the D700. It seemed like a no brainer. Spend a bit more money now and get that awesome kit. Sell Canon gear and its not that expensive really.

I'm now the proud owner of a D700. A 24-70. A 50mm f/1.8 and a 14-24! If I had stuck with Canon I was going to get the 17-40, a great lens but its no 14-24 and I do love wide angle stuff. The 14-24 arrives tomorrow and I can't wait to play with that. A whole 2mm wider than my 10-20 on the 30D and at the wide end thats a lot. Plus 2.8, should be interesting.

Oh the other good thing is that the D700 works with Lightroom right now. 5D2 doesn't yet which would have been annoying in some respect. Plus the file sizes aren't stupidly large.

Observations so far.

+ Awesome viewfinder.
+ The eye cover thing isn't going to fall off like my Canon ones have, sooooo nice.
+ Lens hoods lock better.
+ I keep breaking the lenses when taking them off because they come off the other way to Canon.
+ Shutter sound is sexual
+ Love the customization stuff
+ B&W in live view!
+ Settings available from the rear display not just on top, awesome
+ ISO25,600! Grainy, but fun
+ Auto ISO. Brilliant stuff. Set the lowest shutter speed, highest ISO.
+ AEB does 9 photos!

- AEB only goes up to 1 stop either way, not 2 unless you take 5 photos. Thats going to take a bit of getting used to and hopefully it won't cost me any possible HDRs. When I get the grip it'll go up to 8fps and should be fine.

 Pete, how could you!:bang:

Seriously though have fun with the new kit it's the user not the camera that makes the real difference:thumbs:

Very nice indeed. I do love that new kit feeling.:thumbs:

Still getting it big time 6 weeks into my new C905.

I think you should send your Canon gear to Marcel and me. Just in case you change your mind like, you know.

We'll keep it safe, won't we Marcel? :naughty:

Not quite completely over to the Dark yet then.

Seriously enjoy your new camera:)

my budget will only stretch me to a d300 you lucky boy

Pete, you could always donate that 10-20 to me, LOL.

Well done on the new kit, can't wait to see some of your pics with it.

Welcome to the Dark Side Pete.

'Your journey is now complete!'

Bloody traitor
Seriously though I know you have been considering the move for ages, i'm pleased for if only cause perhaps you'll shut up about it in irc now :D I look forward to seeing the results from it.

I wanted the D700 to work with my gear basically. Would have been cheaper but it wasn't possible. So I threw money at the problem and now I'm broke :D

I've got to work out what I'm selling now, or at least some day. I'm guessing the 430ex isn't going to be of much use? Though I suppose its a better wireless strobe than the Sigma 500.

Boooooooooo Hisssssssssssssss

Where's that forum villain voting form?

lol :p A whole new world baby, technically it gives me more to talk about ;) Oooh full frame bokeh, that 14-24, oooh the iso. Man I can't wait to really go out there.

I don't know what the fuss is all about, it's a tool ;)

Can I suggest you also look at the Fuji S5 as a back up - not a speedy camera but very nice and refurbs are available quite cheaply, plus I think there is a discount code open all december for all cameras bought direct from fuji (about 15% IIRC).

Edinburger Gary mentioned it last night but that FPS is stupidly bad. I'm looking at the D300 or D90. I do events and street photography so its not good for that. Plus handheld HDR at 1fps is going to be a pain so ideally d90 or d300.

And another one gone, and another one gone
Another one bites the dust

Woohooo - welcome to the Dark Side

 what on earth is going on round here, all these Canonites crossing no mans land into the dark side? :D

Pete, cookies on Saturday :woot:
Hi,

if it wasn't for the poorer lens range I think a lot more people would turn ;) I know it was a concern of mine that the range of Nikon lenses just wasn't as good as Canon.

Anyway Pete, I'll give you £300 for the Canon gear and you'll not be out of pocket for the D700 and 24-70 :D

Mike.

I think if you have the money and you don't need Canon's prime lenses it makes sense. The D700, imho for my needs, beats the 5d2 in every respect if you ignore video and MP. 1080p video isn't going to be easy to process on my Mac so thats a feature I can't take advantage of. MP, well I've done well enough with Genuine Fractals. I think people are seeing that. If you want a real upgrade, and obviously I'm not being a fanboy here as I'm only 2hrs into being a Nikonite, the D700 delivers. I couldn't get another xxD and I wanted that uber ISO but with better AF and better fps. Its just not there with Canon and when it is it'll be the £4.5k 1ds4 or something.

Did you not consider the 1dmkIII? Same money and would have worked with all your gear

Oh, I can't make it as this has cost me a little bit so I had to cancel my London trip as it cost at least £250.

Well thats the thing. My bread and butter lenses are between 10(16)-70. Thats what I use every day and its what pays the bills. The Nikon 24-70 is sharper than the Canon so thats awesome. The 14-24 is one of the best lenses you can buy so thats also awesome. I'm not into wildlife or sports or macro so I'm fine. For what I shoot its the better setup. Obviously Nikon are lacking in primes compared to Canon. 24mm f/1.4 85mm f/1.2. I would hope that Nikon know this and are planning on launching some awesome primes soon. They've got the bodies sorted, and the zooms.

Did you not consider the 1dmkIII? Same money and would have worked with all your gear

Its not full frame, doesn't have the ISO range and the Nikon 14-24 is stunning.

Love the customization stuff

I use the default DoF preview button at the front as a shortcut to "My menu" - f6 "assign preview button" in the custom setting menu. Dare I say it - but if you haven't already done so, you could check out our Ken http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d700/users-guide/index.htm

As for auto-ISO, I have difficulty working out why I wouldn't use it permanently - with the possible exception of manual studio flash work.

End of era, dawn of a new one Pete

I'm betting the D700 is a bit of a culture shock coming from the 30D, but I reckon you'll be making the most of it ;)

I know you like your wide angle stuff, so you're going to love that 14-24 on a full frame sensor. It's my least used lens to be honest, but by far the best if you know what I mean. Sharper than a room full of Steven Hawkins's :)

Its so pretty. Camera ain't bad either :D The display is brilliant, really amazing. On my 30D I could never fully tell if the shot was sharp. This, well its in your face sharp. So easy to tell. Its just what I wanted from a display. It'll really help. Need to test it more to see how well it copes with highlights. I often found my 30D would appear blown out when it wasn't due to the display.

Congrats on the purchase Pete, and glad to hear you are liking the switch, makes it well worth while by the sound of your write up so far. Mind you, your not helping, I want one even more now:bat::D

Wow, you jammy sod. Sounds like a great camera :)

Look forward to seeing some results from it :)

Also look forward to your 'for sale' thread ;)
