It was 18 years ago he chose me. An ordinary black and white moggie but earlier today we went to the vets for the last time. Sleep peacefully my old friend, I will always remember you.

Nothing to say that can make it better .... So sorry for your loss. They leave an empty space in your heart that nothing can fill. Sleep tight old friend. <<<>>>

I really feel for you i lost little sox a couple of years back and it hurts.. be strong...

Sorry to hear your news matt - I've lost a few of late so whilst it won't help I know how you're feeling just now.

The oldest of my current three dogs is 17 tomorrow (well it's today now) and I know I'll be facing it again soon.

Run free Oscar.

I feel for you, we've been through this several times, but this was the last kindness you could do for him. Oscar has gone, but you still have the memories of the life you shared. Take strength from that.

RIP Oscar. 18 years is good going. Did he stay indoors? We lost our cat suddenly last year, we also expected 18 years but she was 5. They really do break your heart when they go.

Heart breaking is the phrase, losing a pet seems to hurt more because we invest more of ourselves in them. You know I'm sure that it will get easier over time and thinking of the good times helps. Sorry for your loss.

Ive got a 20 year old fella with kidney failure and expecting a similar visit any time. Not looking forward to it one bit. My sympathies.

A real shame sorry to hear about Oscar
It's always hard when they go at least he lived to a good age

Sorry to hear the sad news, been there, done that and it feels like cr@p, I'm sure he's off on another adventure now.

Not when he was a youngster, but once he got to about 12 he stayed in a lot more.
Our other cat seems to miss him too. She's sat by our feet now and that's most unusual. Still in bits, as is my wife. Feels like crap.
Thanks everyone.

A new pet can't really replace an old friend BUT they can help fill some of the hole the old friend has left.

:( we've all been there and feel your pain. I've just given our two little monsters a hug thinking about it.. (Even though they're being little sods)

What Nod said.. Time (and kittens) are a healer :)

The way I dealt with losing my 16yr old Olly, was that he had to go to make room for another one who needed a home more.

I still miss him, and his space in my heart is still there, but Benji has made his own space now.

....it is still crap when it happens though

Aww, I know exactly how you are feeling. I've had to put my 11 years old black cat, Chad, to sleep after the vet discovered cancer in his mouth (I thought it was a rotten tooth, it just came on quite quickly) and six months on I still miss the little dude. Makes you wonder how something measuring 18 inches in size could take up so much room in your life.
However, next door's 1 year old black cat, Bandit, has taken upon himself to be the next Chad as he spends more time here at my house than next door . . . but the spooky thing is that his mannerisms and habits are exactly the same as Chad's so at least his spirit is still very much alive.

It does in time.

Shame about OPs loss and as a cat person I know how thet feel. We had a white female who went on to 24 years of age.

Friends in Nottingham have 3 young cats to rehome. They rescued a pregnant cat who produced 7! Place is a madhouse but no need for TV!

My last cat (Ringo) was killed outside the house. The house seemed empty for months.
