Apologies if this has been asked before, done a search but could nt find anything

I need to replace my steam driven laptop with something a bit more modern

I'll confess to knowing nothing about computers. I know I want a desk top and thats about it

A friend is going to build it, I just need to give him the specs, and this is where I need the help

Ill use the laptop for the internet and the desk top for mainly PS, once I have figured out how to use it

Unless your friend is in the trade and can pass significant savings on to you, I would be very much inclined to buy a Dell these days rather than self-build, especially as you're not after anything too fancy. Take a look here for their latest offers. I say this having built PC's for myself and many others in the last 3-4 years.

Spec depends largely what programs you want to run on it.

Generaly with computer spec is the more the better. But the computer I would chose may not suit you.

You could do worse than going to the Dell web site and copying one of the Dimension specs.

Don't skimp on RAM. I would go for a minimum of 2GB.

If you can afford it a 19" monitor. Maybe a wide screen version.

Set yourself a budget and see what you can get. Don't forget PC World et all are falling over themselves to sell at really good prices. You may be better off buying a standard machine. Can work out cheaper.

The Dell option may be the best route .

some quick answers there, thanks

Im not in the UK, so PC world etc not really an option

But the Dell site has given me some idea of specs, Ill go down the local computer souq and price things up

Budget of about £2,000 for everything

I am looking for a new pc later this year, i have just looked at some HPs with 24" hd screen (£350) and pretty good spec base unit(3g ram, 500g HD, 256mb dedicated video ram and all the usual dvd/card ports/usb's/firewire etc) for about £800-£900

If it's mainly for photo editing (not games) try and stretch the budget to include a NEC or EIZO monitor. The UXi range are touted to be the best value but are £450 upwards. Basically you're looking for IPS or S-IPS panels not TN for the best contrast and colour.
