Are you looking for a zoom to replace the 17-55 or are you looking for something to complement it.

First option I'd say something like the Tamron 17-50mm non VC, second option something like the canon 85mm 1.8

Do you mean something similar but cheaper?

The Tamron 17-50 2.8 non-VC gets good reviews.

I have a Sigma 18-50 2.8 which I'm very pleased with. Better build than the Tamron but maybe not quite as sharp by the sound of the reveiws.

There is also the Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS but you'd be extremely lucky to get one in budget.

You're never going to get a like for like replacement. That is probably the best EF-S lens Canon have ever produced. The Tamron gets close in terms of sharpness but the build quality is nowhere near that of the Canon. The Sigma has better build quality than the Tamron (IIRC) but isn't quite as sharp.

Do you have a particular focal length you prefer to use ? If so, maybe a wider prime and 50mm f1.8 may fit the bill better ?

Looking to replace it? Any of you guys had any experience with this lens, ive heard its very very sharp.
Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD

A second thumbs up for the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 Just make sure you get one from a shop to test it at F2.8 for front focusing. If buying second hand and it does front focus it costs less than £40 to fix with Sigma so not a major headache, just price that in :)

my colleague uses the tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (non VC) apart from the focus noise i have no complaints, especially with its optical performance.

Have you considered the Canon 50mm f/1.4? It's great for portraits.

Why not keep the 17-55mm? as mentioned above there isn't really a like for like replacement

I suppose the nearest would be the Sigma 17-50mm OS, but that's more than 300 quid

Tamron 17-50mm, but I would just keep the Canon ?
