What software is available for the iPad to edit RAW files to a good/high standard similar to Lightroom/Aperture?

Agreed. Why would anyone want to edit photos on a 9.5 inch un-calibrated screen, no mouse or keyboard input and feeble processing power?? Tablets are toys for web browsing and entertainment.

Or for the rapid turn round of live news shots, complete with full captioning & IPTC presets.
The native calibration of the iPad's screen isn't too shoddy either.


Both Filterstorm Pro and Photogene will edit and convert RAW files.
 
A decent netbook would do all that, and do it better, and faser, and also be used for more serious applications as well.. and you I can stick a USB pen drive in it.. and use a proper keyboard.

My iPad, in it's leather case, is quite literally a drinks coaster at the moment. Most useful thing it's ever done.

I've been completely frustrated with the iPad since I got it. It's connectivity is pathetic. It's a very, very poor substitute for a decent and powerful netbook, and a million miles away from a decent lightweight laptop.

It's a toy.

Used properly the iPad can be a very powerful business tool, but you need to stop thinking about it in terms of a laptop/netbook substitute. It isn't either of those things! :)
 
Well. other than as a portable electronic portfolio, I've yet to find a task for it that my latop, or even my little netbook can't do much better. I also don't have to buy stupid dongles and connectors for them to do simple things like... oh.. I dunno... plug a USB stick in. :bang:


I'll be buying a MS Surface though... that looks like everything the iPad SHOULD have been.

And they're wonderful at both tasks. I'm writing this whilst laying in bed and I'll also be in bed when I use my iPad to watch Netflix later on. And I don't have to contort myself or risk roasted nuts like I would when using my laptop to do either of those.

Yesterday I could slip the iPad into my bag and use it to watch a film on the train to/from London. And I didn't have to lug around a huge laptop that ran out of power halfway through the journey home.

But would I be stupid enough to try and edit a load of raw images?. No way!

Hmm, I'm not sure the iPad should have been overweight, underpowered and overpriced.

Actually, that's just my guess. Because the Ms Surface is still hyped-up vapourware and will remain so until MS actually allow some reviewers to get their hands on one.

There are loads of reviews of both the RT and the Pro, and you can buy one.. now. How is that vapourware?


Under powered? The Surface pro has a i5 processor. How is that underpowered compared to the iPad? :) The RT isn't underpowered either, with a decent spec ARM quad core A9 processor. Far more powerful than the iPad's dual core A5 or A6.

Yep.. it's fatter and heavier.. because it doesn't seem to be compromised just to look good.

Anyway... apparently I don't know what I'm talking about, so I'll shut up :)

MS have lost the race, windows is a mess, 7 just about scrapped through, 8 is a disaster, they are doomed, as the PC falls by the wayside, MS is paying the price for ripping of its consumers, with the likes of office etc, SQL licensing etc.

I would doubt surface will be any better.

We have 3 iPads, one my 4years old knocked of us, a d is probably the best education tool since the invent of schools.

One I use for tinternet, and my other half lives by mini, her contacts, calendar, etc synced with everything. Haven't got a pc in the house since 6 months ago, and haven't missed it, and there has been one in the house since I can remember.

If you really want a piece of junk get a galaxy note 10.2 ............ Now that wouldn't even make a decent drinks coaster.

Windows 8 is a disaster for desktops, yes, but that's because it's really designed for touch surfaces, i.e, tablets, where it actually works very, very well.

Besides... install Start8 and Win 8 looks and behaves just like Win 7.. in fact, it has some very nice touches that Win 7 didn't have, and you still have "Metro" available if you want it. I'm happily using Win8 right now, and it's exactly the same as Win7 now I have Start8 installed.

Any better, or sell as well? I doubt it will sell as well as the iPad, no, but it certainly looks better so far.

The PC isn't falling by the wayside any more than any desktop computer is. What's happening is that people who previously didn't need a full blown computer, but had to have one because they didn't really have a choice, are now using tablets, so of course the WHOLE desktop computer market is declining (including Apple). Desktop computers, PCs or Macs will probably continue to decline as only those who actually need them will buy them. For the casual user, who just wants internet, mail and Facebook etc... they'll continue to move to portable devices. We knew that would happen, so I don't know why everyone is all doom and gloom. There'll always be a market for powerful desktop computers.

With something like Nanostudio, my iPad makes a great musical sketchbook and I know other people are using them for fairly serious work.

While the colour is pretty good, I haven't found it a particularly attractive platform for editing photos, though.

No idea why you consider it a piece of junk - I use my Galaxy Note 10.1 every day since I got it, initially for reading and using for viewing and basic editing of photos with Photoshop Touch when away from laptop but since then for so much more.
 
Laminar on the iPad is a decent replacement for Photoshop but it doesn't deal with RAW files.

I love using my iPad to edit photos.
 
Hmm... one commenter says, "Microsoft didn't pull out, they were kicked out by CES". I wonder why.

How many years before Microsoft's presence is Steve Ballmer sneaking around CES in a Gollum-like fashion?

I'm fairly confident you can get an app to do pretty much what you want for the iPad, but there's no overcoming some serious shortcoming's with it. Connectivity being my main issue with it. That lack of connectivity, and inability to get to the underlying file system to properly deal with files (not through iTunes, or i-this, or i-that...) are serious shortcomings that make it less than ideal for serious use.


Anyway.. dragging it back to the main issue... Good quality RAW processing on the iPad. It doesn't exist.

It does on the MS Surface Pro though.. it's called Lightroom :) It runs all your desktop programs, just like your computer does.

Another reason the Surface is a more serious option for photographers, is it's pressure sensitive and it's MUCH easier to connect to external monitors... effectively turning it into a Cintix tablet! Furthermore.. it runs Windows8.. and thanks to it's i5 processor a surface pro can actually run Photoshop... not some cut down, gimped version.. Photoshop... and lightroom... or indeed anything else. No silly app version.. the real deal.. and have pressure sensitivity. Voila... everything an iPad can do, and a viable laptop alternative. It has USB3.0.. and a real, full size USB socket, and a MicroSD card reader socket (OK.. MicroSD not THAT useful for photographers.. but a nice touch)... 4GB RAM, i5 processor.. Intel HD4000 graphics... display port output for simple monitor connectivity. A REAL operating system remember.. you can drag and drop folders, have a working desktop..... it's a tablet, that can actually be used as a computer.

Come on!!!... you seriously think an iPad is a better option???

The iPad is nice and light, and you can present things to clients, and there are some cool apps that can do some wonderful things.. you can watch TV in bed.. yadda yadda... but you can do all that with the Surface, and the Surface Pro is actually a genuine hybrid between tablet and computer that can run all the same software your PC can. Someone said in here that I am making the mistake of thinking the iPad is an alternative to a laptop.. well the surface really is... and how is that a bad thing?

I just think Apple users will not give it the time of day because it's a MS product.. no matter how good it is. Their loss.. I know where my money will be going.
 
There are some android apps for converting RAW to jpg which are ok for quick checks and a backup of your card if you're on a long trip away from home.

However you have to bear in mind that all tablets only have a fraction of the processing power of a higher end desktop, which is what most people use for serious editing.

i maybe the wrong person to advise on an app for the iPad? Photogene isn't to to bad even contains a few borders. All apps/programs will have their plus and minuses. Regards Mike
