Have just bought a gorilla pod slr, was just wondering everyone's thoughts on them?

I've mainly bought it as I'm going away in may & want to take a tripod with me however can't afford the weight of carrying my big one around with me.

I had a quick look at it this morning when it arrived & it seems sturdy enough (canon 400d + kit lens)

So, good purchase or not?
 
yes, i'm confident enough with the Slr Zoom version to put my (heavier) gripped 20D on it with a 55-250 lens on it, found it usefull so far for daft things like clamping the camera to the headrest of my car for some in car long exposure work!

only thing i would like is a quick release ball head for it, i know you can get them but at £30odd they are almost as expensive as the tripod itself!
 
Its just the slr version i've bought, im slightly confused however as according to the website it only holds 800g, according to the packaging 1100g...

Anyway, I will get a better chance to test it tonight :-)
 
Is it SLR or SLR Zoom? That might explain the discrepancy.

I've got an SLR Zoom, never gets used.
 
The only major problem that I have with mine (the 'SLR Zoom' model) is that it can act like a spring, if you push down on it and let go (as you usually do, every time you press the shutter button). The best solution to this problem is to set it all up and then use a remote control to release the shutter, or set the self-timer to at least 5 seconds.

Still, what it loses in stability, it more than makes up for in portability and there have been plenty of times when I have taken it (and needed it) where I wouldn't normally have bothered to take a full tripod :|.

What I'm saying is; it's not bad purchase, as it certainly has it's uses :thumbs:.
 
I bought the SLR version which was fine when I had my kit lens on my 400D, struggles a bit with heavy lenses though so I'm planning on upgrading to a SLR Zoom version. Very handy as stated when you dont want to lug a tripod around, I saw a guy in Bangkok wrap his one round the handrail on the wall around a 50 storey building top for timer pics! Obviously they are trusted!!!

Don't think ill be wrapping mine around any hand rails...the thought of seeing my camera drop aint worth it!

& it's just the slr version according to the packagin :)
 
Posted this shot before but here's an SLR Zoom G'pod with a gripped 50D and 300/2.8 IS on it...around 3.5kg total weight.

Is it annoying having no quick release plate on the Zoom version?

As I use a red snapper head and they have a very simple plate design I was thinking of knocking up a fitting to use the same plate to go on my 'pod when I get it?!
 
I was considering getting one of these.......although I still haven't invested in a proper tripod yet so still just taking hand-held, and main reason being the size and weight but this could fit in my camera bag and follow to the other side of the world. What are they like compared to a decent standard tripod?

They don't compare, simple as that really. Better than nothing but no substitute for the real thing.

As above, they are only around 30cm tall if that & not extendable, i wouldn't dream of using it as my main tripod, I just don't want to carry my tripod around with me on holiday!
