Hi guys. As the title suggests I'm after suggestions for a good place to visit within a sensible drive from Calais for an overnight trip ina couple of weeks?
We did Lille last year which was OK. Have been considering Bruge.
I'll be with the mrs & we'll both have our cameras with us so ideally there will be something worth pointing them at.
All suggestions gratefully received :)

Le Touquet........

Very nice (for France) and lots of War Cemetaries etc around that area.....

Dover

The beautiful old town of Veurne. And I can highly recommend The Old House B&B/Hotel. Google it! I'm staying there twice over the next ten days.

Veurne is very close to the coast - and the war cemeteries. But I think it's worth visiting in its own right.

I read some reviews & it looks a good place to stay. Thanks
I asked a Belgian photographer I know & he said to do Bruges & Ghent so we now have a few places to think about.
At least the tunnels booked anyway :)

Another vote for Le Touquet!

I don't think it is stunningly photogenic, but it is simply the nicest place within easy reach of the Channel Ports.

Le Touquet - Paris Plage:thumbs: Bit like Weston S Mere and they race motorcycles on the beach!

Bruges - loved it, some really typical Belgian architecture:thumbs:

Leper, (Ypres), Belgium. Museum, countryside and the Menin gate - the last post will make you feel very humble:clap:

Bruges

The old town is just full of photogenic opportunities, you can go on the canals, up the bell tower, ride in a horse drawn carriage, loads of restaurants & bars, chocolate, lace, markets, windmills :)

Mimoyecques...the v3 site... Go up on top and see the awesome damage tallboy bombs could do

hmm good shout that, i love a bit of WWII concrete

pretty sure the mrs wants to head into Belgium this time but with crossings as cheap as they are that one might get a visit later in the year :naughty:

Drive to ostende, get a cheaper hotel than in bruges itself & then get the cheap train that takes 10 mins into bruges.

Also, at the cite d'Europe end of the main street in Calais nr the big town hall, there's a boulangerie with yellow signage that sells the best quiches ever......buy buy buy!

Ok, if you are heading that way.... Ypres!

If you've never been there then you must! Apart from historical reasons, its (now) a really beautiful town with some nice eateries.

Add Vimy Ridge as a stop over point to Ypres. It should only need a couple hours to take the basics in, but it's well worth it.

Greetings from Veurne. The sun is out, the hotel wifi has been fixed and I've found a pub showing the footy. Isn't life great :D

Isn't that where the first cigarette shop is over the French/Belgian border? :gag:

Thankfully haven't been there for a number of years - will have to go back an visit properly now

Nothing of the like here. You're thinking of Adinkerke - a few Ks to the NW.

Le Touquet.Fortressed small town of Montreuil near Boulogne..Etaples. just down the road from Le Touquet.

thanks for all the replies.

all we need now is some decent weather & hopefully it will be a nice trip.

Veurne does look like its worth a visit & LeTouquet seems to keep cropping up so that looks like one to maybe see later in the year as its the other direction from Bruges

The light in Veurne central square yesterday evening was wonderful.

Now in Maastricht and the weather is much better than we anticipated. A quick splash of rain an hour ago merely resulted in another sit down at an outside cafe for a beer
