Well, following from my last thread, I'm hopeful that this will spark some good suggestions! Can anyone suggest a good book/series of books for the Hudson amateur!? Seen a few around, but don't know which to buy!

Thanks!

I always recommend this book
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Digital-Landscape-Photography-Barbara-Gerlach/dp/0240810937/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1282721612&sr=1-6

Although its entitled Landscape it has loads of great information regarding exposure, light, histograms and a very clear explanation of back button focusing. Doesn't try to push one brand of camera and isn't taken up with photoshop technique.

Best photography book I have ever read and still refer back to it at times, well worth a tenner

I've seen a lot of recommendations for Bryan Peterson's books, gazmather1973 has just recommended one. I will definitely be buying one myself, you should check out his youtube channel, he has some great video's on there which will give you a taster.

the Scott Kelby digital photography volumes are excellent and I highly recommend them, you can get the entire three volume set for around £35.00

Even better then that amazon are doing the set for £21!

Thanks for the link to the YouTube channel! Shall give that a good looking over! I'll have to search for some of his books! Any particularly good for starting out?

I recommend understanding exposure by Bryan Peterson....it's a great read and really helpful!

I'd echo this - just reading it for the first time and I'm finding it really useful. Amazon have a nice deal on at the moment with a Bryan Peterson bundle, this book together with similar titles focussing on shutter speed and close-up photography. All 3 for about 30 quid

I think I'm right with smiths in saying 4 or more weeks implies more weeks, aka never so I didn't really look into it! I'll send them an email now to check!

I bet they cant get it James, I've seen this before and the item has never materialised. I even looked on Abebooks, who I have used to get some very old 17th century books but no sign of the photography book.

The Peterson book recommended above, and to acompany it The Photographer's Eye by Michael Freeman (make sure you get the right author, there ara a couple with similar titles).

What about any good Digital Photography Videos? Any to recommend?

yup, read understanding exposure (excellent book) and I have the photographers eye waiting to be read

I don't know what's wrong with me but I purchased Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure" after hearing it was the Holy Grail of photography books for newcomers to the hobby and I absolutely detested it. I found it a difficult read, not particularly easy to follow and I came out of it having learned very few techniques - odd, given that I was an absolute new starter in photography.

I've just purchased Scott Kelby's series of books and hope they're better!

I bought Understanding Exp too but only read a tiny bit so far.

Yeah, I really hate it when places say they could get stock but they know they can't! Never mind, people are recommending the peterson book so I shall order that now!

Ordered! This has been an expensive month for photography stuff!

Been saying this for ages and always try to give the alternative view for any prospective buyers
Only good bits were the pictures of his missus, very nice indeed

Don't remind me James, I spent £750 on a Sigma 150-500mm lens....and due to illness, I haven't had a chance to try it yet....LOL

Every month is an expensive month for photography stuff...as I'm beginning to find out. When you get into the hobby and everyone warns you it's going to bleed you dry - believe them. :gag:

Having spent £1k this month on gear, I think I'm doing pretty well! :S Next month it'll only be £600 and the month after too. Then I should be satisfied for a while..... I hope!

another vote for the bryan peterson book understanding exposure,
ive had mine 2 days, and more than half way through it,
most of the stuff i knew, or had seen before, but this book helps to put it all together, i feel like ive been doing a jigsaw for years, and now after reading this book, ive managed to put all the pieces in the right place.
also check out his you tube videos and he also has a dvd , although i think its hard to get a copy of that now. although a lot of the you tube videos are taken from the dvd

also with regard to dvd the karl taylor dvds are as good as any book.
karl taylor dvds and bryan peterson book are money well spent

I got the book this morning! Looks like it should be a good read but I shan't sink my teeth in it till tonight I don't think.

I got It from amazon anyway (I don't really shop at many other sites) so I did only pay £11.

It's a good book so far. Not really teaching me that much that's new at the moment but it is useful to have the basics cemented and im not that far in. The language can be poor at times, but it does the job and is understandable. For under £11 it can't be bad! :D
