Hi guys

Had a bad fall at home today :(

Walked in from the back garden, into the kitchen and slipped - twisted my ankle which made me land against the bin - ribs hit the corner of the bin hard on the way down and needless to say it hurt! So much so I cried!!!!

I have bruising which has gradually shown worse as the day has gone on and a graze on the surface and it feels very tender just sitting here. I'm well and truly sulking and upset :dummy:

Anyways, what to do? I have put pain relieving gel on it to no avail - strong prescription stuff in the cupboard - but it hasn't worked :(

Any advice on gels, painkillers etc... that actually work much appreciated

Kind regards

Sarah

i'd advise a trip to A&E for an xray. You might have a cracked rib there. If it's just muscle pain then a relaxant such as Diclofenic may help.

Diclofenic is prescription only. you'll get codiene based meds over the counter, but only low doses. A&E is your best bet.

Co codamol is paracetamol and codeine. You get them in different ratios and the higher codeine ones do require prescription. Does the job but better to get looked at really.

:hug:Youve got my sympathy I fell on black ice, wednesday with bike (feel like ive been run over with steam roller) and ive been taking co-codomel which has helped.

If, in the longer term, it's still a problem (e.g. pain when sneezing), an osteopath may be able to help. Perhaps phone one on Monday to ask their advice?

Be wary with this sort of injury. If you can't breathe and cough properly you can end up with fluid on the lungs. I broke a rib some years ago and ended up on a really strong painkiller as I was getting wheezy.

Sorry to hear about your nasty fall and that does sound seriously painful.

My only short term advice I can offer is avoid people who makes you laugh a lot.

I would certainly get to A&E, I cracked a rib a few years ago and it was still playing up sometime after.

I have twice injured ribs through a fall. Took 6 - 8 weeks for the pain to disappear. Trying to roll over in bed was agony.

As abobe ribs crack break easily, best to get them checked out and if its only bruising at least they ccan give you something for it.

Hi guys

Thanks for all your kind words and replies. I haven't had problems breathing thankfully, but this morning it feels weird! Still very sore, but it feels really uncomfortable  so I think I'll go to A&E.

And to think the reason for me going out in the garden was to allow me to take more pics - was filling up the bird feeders!

Thanks again for all replies. :-)

A&E for sure.

Interesting where did you get Diclofenic as a muscle relaxant? last i was told it was an anti-inflammatory, and like any anti-inflammatory can reduce muscle spams if the spams are caused by swelling putting pressure on the nerves. I had that and Diazapam, for a couple of weeks.

Hi,
Avoid laughing at all costs....

So this true story may not be helpful. A friend told me this, he has two single sons in their 20's and they share a house whilst Dad renovates another property. Early one evening Dad is at home alone takes a call on the home phone, its a young woman who doesn't give her name but clearly thinks she is talking to one of the boys...
Dad: Hello.....
YW, Hello big boy why don't take me out tonight and s**g me senseless!
Dad, I think you want one of my sons.....
YM, Stifled scream - and then the call is abruptly ended.

Dad is very curious and can't wait for his sons to come home. Unfortunately neither of the boys genuinely know wh the caller was!

And yes it really happened, hope your visit to AE isn't too long or painful! Just take it easy, not a lot you can do with hurt ribs.

Regards,

Duncan

Good Grief - everyone should know by now that this is the only tried and tue pain remedy:

Cracked and broken ribs are nasty, they hurt something nasty! Anti inflamitories are the usual way to go and paracetamol. That's what I was told and sent one my way when I broke mine, took a year before it stopped hurting completely and getting niggly pain, have a lump where the bone healed wrong too.....just don't ask me how it happened, my bad girl image will be ruined for life! lol

That made me laugh!

Anyone know why my ribs would be tingling? Havent been to A&E yet - feel like I'm wasting their time if theres nothing they can do!

Definately go to A & E, unfortunately they can't do anything for cracked ribs but hopefully they will give you a 'cocktail' to ease the pain and get some Arnica cream for the bruising, helps to bring it out:thumbs:

tingling like a deep itching? itching is a feeling that you get when they knit back together. If they're tingling though, go n see someone - or just call the out of hours doc.

Its hard to explain...its a light tingling sensation now and again. Comes and goes really.

Get ursen to the A&E now, your symptoms say you may have a fractured rib and without medical help WILL lead to far more serious stuff.......just get it sorted please

Interesting where did you get Diclofenic as a muscle relaxant? last i was told it was an anti-inflammatory [snip]

You're right. Not sure where I got it being a muscle relaxant from . I've taken them for so long now I must have them confused with something else, but then I do take around 20 pills every day, so the old memory plays up. It might possibly stem from when i lived in the USA and they may have been referred to as muscle relaxants there?

I checked the info leaflet they come with and it does state they belong to a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs group.

I went to A&E after whacking my ribs coming off my bike. They simply pushed on the ribs to see if they clicked and then said to take painkillers. They don't advise strapping them anymore. So for me there was little they could do! Laughing, sneezing, coughing and sleeping were very painful for a few weeks after. I now have a lump on my rib where its regrown

You won't get much help from A&E - after a 4 hour+ wait. Your GP might be a better bet just for the painkillers.

Meanwhile - how did the bin fare?

:D

Ouch! I feel your pain. I fell and hurt my ribs in a snowboarding accident about 4 weeks ago, and although getting better, they still hurt :( I didn't break anything, just severely bruised them.
Avoid heat and use cold instead (helps to reduce inflammation). An ice pack or bag of frozen peas wrapped in a towel does the job nicely. Regular paracetamol or co-codamol along with an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen or diclofenac. Ribs take time to heal, so be patient - avoid any heavy lifting or anything that will strain your ribs.
Hope they get better soon!
