Dramatic sigh.

You know how good things happen then bad things happen then cliché follows cliché and you're posting a rambling thread on social media to share your pain?

So the other day I ordered a set of step up/step down rings so I could use my collection of 52mm filters on my GS's 49mm lens.

Today I wanted to take some photos of kit I'm going to put up for sale using off-camera flash but I couldn't find my flash triggers. After turning the spare room upside down, no luck so I sat down to think about where they might be.

A while later, I had a thought, which is cause for celebration by itself. Back into the spare room and lo, the flash triggers were right there in the box next to the one I thought they were in, so yay!

Then, double yay, under the triggers I found a pile of 49mm filters that I got years ago when I had a brief flirtation with an Olympus OM! Ok, the rings are now fairly superfluous but they might come in handy and I have a set of filters for the GS :)

Of course, I have to try the filters on the GS. To do that, I have to take the screw-in hood off. But it's stuck. It's stuck fast. I jiggle it, wiggle it, giggle it (that one doesn't work) and it moves ... and so does the front element.

Long story short, I have my flash triggers and a set of filters but the GS has to go off for repair as the aperture dial no longer changes the size of the aperture.

Resigned sigh.

I feel your pain man....a sad thing when a camera is poorly.

On the bright side, you now have a 'space' in your collection for another camera!

I have another camera currently residing at HMRC's pleasure* and that was supposed to be the last camera I bought for a good long while. I was going to sell most of my 35mm kit and some MF to leave me with a core kit to take out and use, instead of lining up bodies and lenses on the shelf and spending so long deciding what kit I want to use that I end up not using any of it. :meh: :indifferent:

* Seriously, 6 days to decide how much import duty to apply is a joke - convert stated value to GBP, apply 4.2% duty, 20% VAT and release to ParcelFarce for them to extort money from me - how hard is that?

Further resigned dramatic sighing noises.

Just received an automatic reply from Miles Whitehead telling me he's away until 26/8. I don't mind waiting for Miles to return as I don't have any serious plans to get out with the camera in the short term but can anyone recommend another repairer with an equal reputation?

Actually thats a good idea for a sticky, a list of camera repairers with their speciality (if they have one).

I know the feeling. I have a camera that has been passed through Customs, awaiting payment of charges and haven't got the letter yet from Parcelforce. I also have 2 lenses that managed to arrive in the UK from Japan with 2 days of the sale but have been sitting in Customs since the 5/8. Frustrating isn't it.

Number all the bodies then throw the right number of dice to choose which to take out? Or just put them on the shelf in order of last use and start from the least used end. Simple. No complicated decisions needed :)

There's a camera repair company near me: http://www.pjcamerarepairs.co.uk/ They guarantee the whole camera for 12 months after they have looked at it which seems quite good. They also say straight off whether something isn't up their street so you don't get messed around either.

Quick google shows up these fellows in London: http://www.apertureuk.com/camera_repairs.html

I'm pretty sure I know which ones I want to keep. Any bets on the number of partially-used 35mm films I'm going to remove from bodies that I loaded in good faith and then did nothing with? I'll start you off with 1 from the Zorki-4 ...

Thanks, Suz, I'll take a proper look at those later. :)

Totally this, every time I go out somewhere.

Sent an enquiry to PJ Camera Repairs (above) and have just received a reply telling me "suspect you have broken off the aperture coupling post. If so parts are required that are no-longer available". Short and not sweet.

I've since found a reference to a Fuji specialist in Holland, another in Germany and a chap in the US but all from about 5 years ago so fingers crossed.

PJ is a bit blunt it has to be said. I'd probably wait for Miles to return and take something else from the collection for a spin ;)
