Hi,

Was looking to add a new lens to my very small collection and I was looking at the "Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG Macro".

What I was looking for is something a little better quality wise than the Canon 18-55 EF-S, but sadly I'm not able to spend vast amounts.

I thought this lens would be a good all-rounder, general snaps, landscapes, with a slight zoom to get in close on portrait or as I class would class, a good people shots lens. - Not looking for true portrait value am no Pro!, plus it has Macro capability. It looks like a very good "Suits most needs lens" like one you would use most of the time.

Can I have some opinions on whether I am going to get any benefit by adding this lens to my collection and will it be better than the canon I already have.

Any other ideas would be gratefully recieved as well.

Thanks Guys

on a crop sensor I'd say the 24-70 isn't wide enough for landscapes, if you want something f2.8 look at the sigma 17-50 or if you want a cracking good value general purpose walk about lens that will hardly ever come off the camera get a sigma 17-70mm not as fast but much more versatile than either of those and a lovely range on a crop body.

Personally I'd go for the 17-70 by Sigma. The 24-70 is a great lens, but you may miss the wideangle as on a crop body that is going to struggle as an 'allrounder' (in my opinion!)

The 17-70 is a great lens and highly recommended! Much lighter and smaller than the 24-70 too!

Cheers,
James

I have the Sigma 24-70 and it is a real gem. It is one of my main wedding lenses. With the announcement of a new model with HSM you may find a real bargain of a deal for the older model.

I use the 17-70 and can vouch for its nice handling and optics that i havent really been able to fault.
Yes its not the fastest in f stops or in focusing but i have had it nearly a year and isn't one of thelenses i would want to get rid of!

You could also look at the Canon 28-105mm USM II. I used this as my upgrade to the kit lens, it cost £80 on eBay, and I think it has been a great upgrade, sharp, quite and a great range.

Although I do lust after a 24-105mm.
