Okay guys, would appreciate opinions on the best horror films out there - although I appreciate its a very subjective thing. I like originals, not remakes.

My fave horrors/thrillers include

*Halloween (ORIGINAL)
*Texas CM (ORIGINAL)
*The Shining

NO ANIMAL TORTURE PLEASE
HUMAN TORTURE IS FINE :D

So any recommendations going, would be much appreciated, as I feel like scaring myself ****less :D Things like Saw are just bloodthirsty. I want proper crap your pants films

Thanks in advance

Ha! I seem to be following you, probably brcause you#re from my neck of the woods.

Not really into horror, but one that I enjoyed was Carrie, although that must of been more than 20+ years ago. I bought a DVD from The Range a couple of years ago for £2.99 called The Broadcast I think. I think it was a fore-runner to the Blair Witch, but so much better.

Anything Japanese that Hollywood Hasn't FU.

RING RING 2 RING 0
The Grudge

and a few more I can't think of.

House of a thousand corpses.

Not typical horror but worked for me.

The Descent - great British horror flick that'll scare the **** out of you.

Let the right one in - not strictly horror really but a great flick none-the-less.

Yeah I've done that and because I'm clostrophobic it was even worse. Oh my imagine being stuck down there in the caves with those creatures. Oh the noises they made. :help: Oh and when she's climbing across the gap with the fastener things and realises someone's already been down there.

Dog soldiers, 28 Days later, 28 weeks later

I still love The Exorcist and the Omen films and Texas Chainsaw Masacre.

More modern -

Check out Rob Zombie's 'House of a 1000 Corpses' and the follow up 'Devils Rejects'

The original George A. RomeroNight of the Living Dead (not the awful 1990 Tom Savini remake)is well worth a viewing.

American Werewolf in London is another favourite of mine, scary and funny, with a great soundtrack

For sheer cheese Ed Wood's 1959 effort Plan 9 From Outerspace is well worth watching, widely regarded as the worst film ever made....

Fist time I saw Haloween I had to watch it in the daylight as I thought Michael Myers would come and get me. For me it is the most scary.
I would also go with The Ring.

Alien

The Evil Dead

The Exorcist [SE version]

The Thing

Jeepers Creepers [not 5 star horror but I liked it]

Check out Creep - you will never be able to go on the Underground again!

Are these really the most scary films out there. I've seen most listed and cab honestly say none have scared me apart from the exorcist which I watched when I was ten. Horror films should be scarier!

Both the Rob Zombie films are a bit sick, not jump out of your seat stuff though.
Drag me to Hell, both the original and the Sam Raimi re-make.
Nosferatu
A lot of the original George Romeo zombie films
Evil Dead series

Have a look at some of the Japanese and Korean films like The Grudge, The Ring, Dark Water, Ichi the Killer, The Curse, Audition, Cure etc etc

Have you tried some of the earlier Dario Argento stuff like, Deep Red, Suspiria, Tenebrae and Inferno, all classic Italian Horror/slasher type stuff. (Spoken in English)

Im pretty sure ive still got some Anchor Bay DVD's of those ive mentioned should you want to borrow them.

I think Alien is horror, just in a Sci-Fi setting, but its my favourite.

Near Dark. A vampire film made by Kathryn Bigelow before she was famous. The best vampire film I've seen.

I love both Jeepers Creepers films. Although there are many 'don't go in there!' moments, it has loads of suspense, which can be more scary than blood and guts flying across your screen.

Brain Dead - classic B-movie (full of black comedy) courtesy of peter jackson. Loads of blood, nasty bits falling off people's faces and a kung-fu vicar

The Fall of the House of Usher staring Vincent Price released in 1960.

Saw it at the Scala Cinema in Bristol late one dark night. The cinema was partly under a raised railway bridge, creating a dark and scary atmosphere. The cinema showed only horror films and I was under age for the film. Looked over my shoulder all the way home.

Ken

A lot of good suggestions here, but quite a few are humour based rather than horror (IMO - esp Dog Soldiers. Great stuff!!)

Especially pleased to see Near Dark mentioned, because I think it's one of the best Vampire movies out there. "I hate it when they 'aint been shaved". Cool, rather than scary though, and the soundtrack from Tangerine Dream (?) added to the whole thing. Nearly the whole cast went with Kathryn Bigelow on to do Aliens soon after.

Anyway, here's my tuppence...

Scary:
The Thing, The Prince of Darkness, Salem's Lot, Exorcist, Alien. Funny how it's 70's/early 80's movies that seem to be more scary. Maybe because I was so young when I watched them. Maybe it's the lack of special effects that forced the directors to use suspense.

Semi-scary splatter horror:
30 Days of Night, 28 Days Later, Diary of the Dead, Sam Raimi's Evil Dead, Cloverfield, Aliens, Near Dark.

Comedy Horror:
Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland (if only for Bill Murray), Hellraiser, Dog Soldiers.

What Other People Think Is Scary:
Paranormal Activity was a big pile of pants IMO, but I think I'm alone on that.
Blair Witch Project. As above.

I also like watching the old Hammer Horror films with varying degrees of appreciation. Some are rubbish, and some are really good. Can't think of any names though off the top of my head.

The Orphanage (2007) - it's in Spanish if you don't mind reading during the film. Probably the most unsettled I've felt after a film since The Decent.

HUMAN TORTURE IS FINE :D
Even better when its done correctly ...

I like loads of sci-fi/horror but a few more recent ones i suppose are

The Descent
Hostel
The Cottage
The Mist
Silent Hill
Orphan
Planet Terror (just for Rose McGowan)
Van Helsing (and Kate Beckinsale)

.

Some of these are pretty extreme (especially some of the Japanese ones and most of the French) but since you mentioned "HUMAN TORTURE IS FINE"... If you really want extreme then Martyrs is my pick of the bunch - check it out before Hollywood butchers it next year.

Spanish:
[Rec] (2007)
The Orphanage (2007)

Japanese:
A Tale of Two Sisters (Janghwa, Hongryeon) (2003)
Audition (1999)
Battle Royale (2000)
Oldboy (2003)
Suicide Club (2001)
Visitor Q (2001)

French:
Frontière(s) (2007)
Haute Tension (2003)
Inside (À l'intérieur) (2007)
Martyrs (2008)

Hungarian:
Taxidermia (2006)

English (USA):
Session 9 (2001)

Dog Soldiers.
Nosferatu.
American werewolf in London.
Invasion of the body snatchers, 1970's : with the moustache fella in it.

The original, Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Nosferatu
The Cabinet of Dr Caligari
Don't Look Now

I was trying to remember his name  Well worth watching if you like that sort of stuff

Whilst not exactly riveting horror, one of the films I saw recently was Let the Right One In and I was impressed by it.

Can't remember if i have seen that, what was it about.

Swedish film subtitled. A young boy befriends a neighbouring young girl[?] who turns out to be a vampire. He's being bullied at school and she helps him out. The girls father [or guardian?] acquires the blood she needs by doing the killing, but when he is in danger of being found out he kills himself, and the girl has to resort to her own killing.

House of a thousand corpses.

Not typical horror but worked for me.

Although I prefer The Devils Rejects which is kinda a sequel.

28 days later, Dog Soldiers, The Descent, The original Ring films are all good.

The thing. (looking forward to the prequel)

The best is Alien.

Poltergeist, scared the bananas out of me

:plusone: for Pet Cemetery

Not sure if it it qualifies, as it's more psychological thriller than horror film, but Jacob's Ladder is worth watching
