The other half is just starting to get interested in photography (mainly from following me around!) she is the sort that only can learn from a book - she wont listen to me.. ha any good 'getting started' books which will cover camera modes, shutter speeds ISO etc ??

Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson worked for me. Seems to be loved and hated in equal measure but it was the only book that I read that made this stuff sink in when I was starting out.

:plusone: Excellent book, highly recommended. The others I enjoyed reading were the Scott Kelby series 'Digital Photography', I think he's just brought out another volume so there is 4 in the series now.

Thanks ive ordered the one in the link before so hopefully that will get her started :)

theres some great tutorials on the web, would she read on screen on a PC/Ipad if she has one

If she's just getting interested.. then don't try and kill off that interest with aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc.

Start photography on auto (most cameras are very good at it these days), and concentrate on taking interesting photos. When you can't get them interesting in the way you want, then it's time to get technical. So start with either The Photographers Eye (Freeman) or Hot Shots (Merideth), or a book of photographs by other photographers such as Photography as Contemporary Art (Cotton). These three books are amongst those I still turn to for ideas, inspiration and motivation.

Not sure yet - I can only hope! She did have a crappy canon point and shoot but started getting so annoyed that my images looked so much better.. Funny that after spending 2k on kit!! Last year we got her a little fx150 bridge , it ticks the boxes for her all in one camera, huge range, fast, raw, and screw in filters , good focus, in fact I'm quiet jealous sometimes as its the same weight of one of my lenses!se does get the numbers , but basics like getting the light right, checking the histogram she just seems to think is to much faf.. We are booked on ryanyboys course next weekend on portraits so I hope she will listen to someone else :)

Thanks for pointing out understanding exposure the book, ordered it and its really very good, any technical book my mind tends to wander, but not this one. Great example photos and straight forward explanations.

Oh and make sure its the third edition as it has been updated to 2010 standard of digital cameras.

Regards

Mark

Its not actually a book, but a podcast

Called "The Art Of Photography" By an american called Ted Forbes, Whilst he does cover a range of photographic subjects the earlier podcasts 1 - 10 do cover the basics which I found really good. each episode is no longer than 30 mins at a time.

Can be watched on the web or downloaded via itunes free
