Having cleaned up the mess in the garage, I found a lot of stuff that I have in boxes would be better on a freestanding set of shelves.

I thought a nice metal one would suit me but turns out the latest ones (from b&q) are made with cheap metal that bends and is meant to slot together. The better ones tend to be made out of plastic.

But I'd prefer a heavy duty metal 5-tier shelf unit. Ideally in black to fit in with the colour sheme i have in mind for the garage.

Do you have any suggestions? Or other places to look jnstead of b&q?

Bought some wooden ones years ago from Ikea. They have survived 3 house moves ;)

Mine came from costco, I've put car engines on them in the past so they are quite sturdy.

Search for boltless racking rather that shelves. Plenty on eBay. Take notice of the depth some are not very deep. I went for the deepest 650mm I think.

Give Bigdug a try. I've bought from them before and the prices are really good. Quality is excellent and they are very strong.

Husband got his from Costco. They are big, chunky looking shelves and store a lot of "junk"

These or alternatively get some timber and make your own like i have - you can custom them to fit where you want to then :)

Second this. I've just kitted out a new shed with these- they are great- and you get workbench type ones also

Thanks for the advice. The Clarke ones look similar to a lot of the other ones I've seen - same colours, same weight, same size/dimensions/build. I finally saw them in one of the shoe shops when the missus dragged me around.

Machinemart - I remember when I was a kid that we had to have ID/proof of address to become members before they let us in (a bit like costco now). Is that still the case or is it open to Joe Public?

They let anyone into their shopes now, even me :)

If you are going to machine mart keep an eye open for discount weekends ie vat free, 10℅ off etc as they come along regularly.

Also had the new screwfix catalogue on the weekend. They do shelving but not sure on quality/price etc but could be worth a look

I just got an email from these people. I know nothing about them but their stuff looks well specified and reasonably priced.

I've got rapid racking all round in our main garage. Super duper quality commercial grade stuff. Very pleased with it. Strong enough to have had transmissions and engines on them as well over the years :)
