Didn't know this exact fact, always knew diet and obesity massive increase of risk from type 2 diabetes but....

Body fat building up around the pancreas causes stress to the beta cells in the organ that controls blood sugar levels.
They stop producing enough of the hormone insulin, and that causes blood sugar levels to rise out of control.
Dieting loses the fat, and then the pancreas works properly again.

So if you are overweight but think you avoid high sugar foods for that reason think again...

I made the decision to change my lifestyle a couple of months ago because of the risk of diabetes, I was/am the perfect example of the 'at risk' class. I've cut out as far is is possible all sugars and carbs from my diet* and am losing weight nicely. I'm over a stone down in a bit under 8 weeks, could do it faster but I'd prefer to be able to keep it off when I'm done. My target is to lose another three stone and that will take me down to 14st. I've cut out all potatoes, sugar, rice, pasta, milk and alcohol, basically anything that contains sugar or carbs that your body turns into sugar. I still eat a bit of bread but look for a loaf with the least carbs in it (Lidl 31.7%) and restrict myself to a couple of slices at breakfast. I feel more awake than I have for ages, I no longer get heartburn at night which is great as I save a fortune on antacids. I miss potatoes (chips) but not as much as I thought I would, I eat lots of veg and I'm a carnivore so all meat is fine as is fish.
There's a book you can buy or get from your doctor for free called the Blood Sugar Diet, the author is a bit in love with himself but the advice is sound.

* Going through the kitchen cupboards when I started I ended up throwing nearly everything out, some sauces were 60% plus sugar and nearly all packets are stuffed with carbohydrates.

Sounds like you have a great plan going there, I was realy shocked a few years ago when I started to realise how much sugar was in things and also how bad the advice about sugar itself being the issue.
We are so used to being told about fat and obesity being the biggest issues when so many contributing factors.
I recently watched a program which said that skinny people that binge on high sugar diets are actually more at risk than overweight people with low sugar diets.

I personally lost weight I am a reasonable 12st down from 14st and make sure all our weekly meals are healthy with very little added suger and salt apart from a bit of sauce and plenty of salad.

I remember quite some time ago, reading summat about ongoing trials living on a near starvation diet for a few months & `curing` type 2 diabetes for a good % of the patients.

Yes there is a trial in Tyneside and Strathclyde - putting people on a strict 800 calerie diet for 8 weeks. I'd even contemplate taking part but you have to be registered with certain participating GP practices.

I've gone for 103 kg to 91 kg - need to lose 5-10 more, but I am doing this gradually with a mixture of better portion control in my diet and more exercise. I have started Metformin but also on 2nd line treatment that simply sheds glucose out through with the urine... Once I get to my weight then I will focus on what I eat more.

I never had a problem with Diabetes. But losing body fat has other benefits as well.
I hit 15 stone a few months ago and decided to cut out all snacks between meals and no added sugar.
I have lost 1 stone so far. but as my problem was arthritis in my back. I have been doing exercises three times a day. The fat is certainly coming off, but I am putting on the necessary supporting muscle.

As muscle weighs more than fat, I have reached a point where the weight loss is very slow...even though the fat is coming off.

I weighed 13 1/2 stone in my late teens, but with no fat at all, and looked very slim. I remained that weight throughout my working life, but slowly replacing the muscle with fat. I am no longer slim, but far from fat.
I had hoped to be back to 13 1/2 stone by Christmas, but I have no chance at the moment. but I should be much fitter.
I will never be able to get rid of the arthritis, but strengthening my back will support it far better and help control the pain. The rest of me will be far fitter too.

that is true that a lot of lower back pain is linked to weight issues and hence poor posture.
good luck with your plans.

I think I can see why medics should supervise such a diet. Basically controlled starvation.

it is but it shocks the system to lose the weight that allows the organ to recover and restores function.
highly effective according to the results.

The acid test will be whether the patients return to their old eating habits and hit the diabetes trail again.

absolutely right mate, that's why we need to get a control of this silly obesity epidemic so badly.
I just despair walking around Wakefield at lunchtime, I know it is a very deprived area but so many young people already with a lot of weight on.
so many problems being stored up for the future.

I notice that a lot of primary school children are little porkers. Some eat chocolate etc. and crisps on the way to the school bus in the morning. Lots of bad habits being acquired at a very early age.

thing is a lot of it is just straight from the overweight parents.
look around and see how many really big moms and dads.

Yip, for many families the vicious circle has been completed.
Just come out of Lidl. Noticed a girl about 14/15 yo. She was walking about whilst devouring a large pastry that was plastered with cream and jam. She was already in the "once round her = twice round an elephant" category. Probably doomed to poor health and misery. What a tragedy.
