Hi all,

I'm after a nice hardcover book for a friend who is taking a photography course.

She is using both point and shoot as well as DSLR's. I'd like the book to be a good read for a beginner upto advanced level.

Any recommendations? If not a book any other photography related presents which won't break the bank?

Thanks! And apologies if this is the wrong section.

Hi Jimbob,

the latest edition of Langford's Basic Photography might be quite nice, there's an Advanced book too depending on what level she's at.

Hope this helps.

Whilst very instructive, i found it a bit too dry, more like a textbook. Got a pristine copy on my bookshelf...

This has been recommended elsewhere and looks good

I have this:-

If you let us know your friends preferred style, i might be able to tailor the recommendations.

Thank you. RE the second link, would you recommend the DVD alongside it?

Looks to be a good combo :)

In all honesty i wouldn't say she knew enough to have a preferred style at the moment.

Seems they have been removed :(

Any other ideas? I want something instructive but not too dry, the course she is on isn't going into any depth on the subject in all honesty, it seems the other group has got the good teacher.

"Understanding Exposure" is my recommendation as well - very good learning tool.

What style of photography inspires them?

Thank you all. I decided to get her understanding exposure as well as Langfords :)
