Im off to London tomorrow for a nice long weekend. Im going there for a nice relaxing time to people watch and soak up some culture (Also going to the Royal Albert Hall for a concert \o/). But as I get payed on Friday I might have to 'accidentally' fall into a camera shop and end up buying the new lens im after. :D So where do you Londonites suggest for me to fall into? I don't know London very well, so it should be fairly easy to find and ideally withing Zone 2 of the tube system. Any suggestions?
 
Hey MK - a bit of capital culture huh?
There's loads of great shops - many tucked away.
I'd recommend Camera City, Grays of Westminster (expensive but always have all the toys), Jacobs Oxford St & LCE on the Strand.

There are quite a few shops near the British Museum worth checking out (especially for used equipment). There is Apeture on Museum street, which is combined with the camera cafe (how can you not visit a place called the camera cafe?). Also York Cameras towards the oposite end of the museum to Tottenham court road, and finally the Leica speciallist hidden behind York Cameras at the back of the courtyard. Three of my favorite shops in London.
 
Cheers guys. Im after a Sigma 30mm f1.4 HSM Nikon fit. Since Grays of Westminster is Nikon only, does this rule Sigma products out (even though its a Nikon fit)?

Im intending to go to the British Museum anyway (Hoping to see the Terracota Army) so Aperture sounds good. And I agree, the camera cafe does sound tempting.:)

I've been to the one next to the British Museum, wish there are those all round instead of jessops.

You might also want to look out for Teamwork Photographic on Foley st and Cameraworld in Wells st (both just off TCR).
Calumet have their flagship branch in Drummond St, next door to Euston station.
Lastly Fixation just in Vauxhall are just a bit further away to find, but they are jolly nice to deal with and have just opened a new showroom having moved to Kennington lane.

I should have read your post in more detail, apart from Camera World all the above close on Saterdays.
 
Another vote for Jacobs on new oxford street - staff seem very friendly, and if you can get the guy who looks to be a few years older that the others, he is really good !

i would recommend microglobe, i was in there on tuesday and bought a couple of things,and there is also jessops and york camera's (although i did'ent find york very helpful)in the same vicinty.
 
But beware -Microglobe sell imports - might be cheap, but Jacobs offered me cheaper for non imported stuff...

I always seem to end up in Camera world in wells street I find the staff helpful and very knowledgeable plus they do not mind how long you take with your purchase.. Last time I was there I tried 3 lens that were on my to get list, they will marry the lens to any body you require and you do not get stalked when on the pavement playing with the kit.

you got to go to grays even if you dont buy anything , just good looking around there. i will be there on saturday morning ready for when they open getting an sb 600 .

I definitely recommend Aperture photographic on Museum street.

Free tea and coffe, and a huge range of Canon stuff, both new and second hand.
 
Last time I looked they had a very tasty 200/4 micro at a nice price. If it's still there, I suggest MK that you leave your credit card in the hotel safe when you visit Aperture.

AF or MF version?

I have the MF version, but I think I overpaid for it. They go new for £900 and 2nd hand for like £200. I paid £440 for a new one...
 
This was an AF version for £690 or thereabouts, which is an OK deal for a nice one, which this seemed to be. Good used ones are usually £800ish.

Yeah, I had a great time thanks. Played tourist, ate loads and generally had a good time. In the end I got the lens from Jessops for a bit over the odds. But its a very sharp copy and im generally very happy with it so thats the main thing. I ended up in Jessops after trying the place near the Leica shop, the smaller Jessops and Jacobs. Unfortunately non of them had the lens in stock. I'll post some of the shots up when I get them processed. Most of them are a bit rubbishy touristy ones though.
