Hi all,

I am looking for an advanced backup application for my Macbook. Any pointers would be appreciated; would you please also indicate why you like whatever product you point to.

Thanks

Hi,

are you using osx 10.5 leopard.?

do you have time machine? i have it set to back up everything every hour, always forget its doing it but at least i dont have to worry about it,

havent needed to use it yet, but you never know, i also back up all my photos to several other drives, every so often (should really do it more)

Time machine is easy to set up, all you have to do is assign a harddrive to be your back up one and it does everything else.

any question, just shout,

Thanks, but I am not using Leopard, am on Tiger.

That aside, I am not too sure that Timemachine is suitable? I have 6 remote drives that needs to be backed-up to one Master Backup drive. To complicate things further, these remote drives are not connected to my machine all the time; so, I would need the application to be aware of whenever any particular drive is connected, and then back-it-up.

trust you to complicate things with your 6 fancy harddrives. :p

sound like you will need something a bit more advanced.

this has nothing to do with your drives but have you seen the Drobo looks awesome but i wouldnt get the full use out of it.

im sure someone will pop in soon and let you know of something useful.

I use Time Machine to backup an external drive as well, when it's setup all you do is remove it from the exclusions list. It also doesn't seem to bother it if it backs up and the external drive isn't attached - the files stay on the backup drive and it carries on backing them up when the hard drive is reconnected.

I really would recommend upgrading to 10.5.

Thats what i use :) i also have another tb drive that i copy my photos too, so i am not 100% relying on the drobo (i have worked far too long in IT to depend on a single point of failure :))

So far have 2x 750gb and 1x1TB drives in it.

I also have a 320gb external drive setup as a time machine backup that runs hourly.
