No
Just moved from DSLR as i found it too bulky and never got used (Canon 550D). I need advice as to what to buy that will give me flexability and pocketability while being under £200.

I am after a compact that will fit in my pocket and give me great IQ and also the chance to fiddle around with the settings.

Not fussed on which brand. Would be using it to take photos of the family / hols.

Fuji X10 or Canon G12?

True, but the Op wants great IQ. You pays your money etc. ;)

true, true.

btw - I would get the panasonic gf3 + 14mm f2.5 + lightroom 3.0 for 250. best price/performance if the op can live without zoom.

although compacts can give great results when used carefully, but yes - compact with pro knobs for under 200 - mission impossible I think.

Nikon P300

Is that a good one to buy?

Or even an Canon Powershot S90 Or

Do i opt for a panny micro four thirds costing more?

Some good prices on the GF3,you could also look at the LX5 which you made be able to pick up at good price :)

Bought a Canon SX220 HS today. With £30 cashback it will cost me £149. Going away the weekend so will test it out then!

Think people need to be more specific on their size requirements in these daily 'what compact' type of threads otherwise they will get a whole range of answers that are not applicable
To me fitting in a pocket means it has to be pretty small (S100, P300 etc,.) whereas the first cameras offered are X10, G3 etc,. which no way fit in any of my pockets. Maybe I like a small pocket on my clothing :)

I have been through a number of compact over the last 6 months and am seriously thinking the X10 is the one for me as it does everything I need and is a pleasure to use and is one of those cameras that just makes me want to go out and take photos.
However, I would not say it is particularly small and it doesn't fit in my pocket. The factor for me is it is still much easier to carry around than a DSLR while giving close enough IQ for me to be satisfied.

Used the Canon PowerShot SX220 HS in a number of different places / locations and got to admit the pictures have come out A1. Superb clarity and crispness to them. Awesome IQ.

Well, liked the shots from the SX220 HS but i really need a camera with a viewfinder!! Just cant get on with looking at the LCD all the time!

Been looking at either a G2 or a G3 at a push. G2 seems within my price range with the possibility of getting a 14mm for it eventually? What do you experts think?

Funny how one sells one type of camera and then regrets it!!

Moved away from DSLR to a compact and then a G3 only to pine for a DSLR again!! lol

As per other threads / posts, in a quandry at the moment as i like 3 different cameras but cant pin one down as have tried / played with all 3.

500D, 50D and D90 all seem great to use. 50D did seen like a beast though. Very solid and heavier than the other 2. There is quite a price difference between them too. 500D being the cheapest and also the lightest! Not having anything to use with any particular make makes it open for me to choose any.

I would probably be after a prime like a 50mm or even a Tamron 17-50. The pics from the D90 looked cracking but so did they from the other 2! I am guessing that all 3 will produce the same type of images.

They probably will, so go by what feels right in your hand and comfortable and intuitive for you to use. When I was looking the 500D felt too small, the D90 felt right to me. (I got a 50 (2nd hand for £50) and the Tamron 17-50.)

I think I went through the same thing over a similar time period, from Canon DSLR to a TZ series compact to a PEN and a G2 and now happily back with a 500D :).

I wanted smaller and more convenient, and I've found the 500D will fit in the same pockets and bags the G2 did, but with much nicer IQ and colour (and IMO, ease of use).
