Well after whinging for far too long that my inside elbow was hurting I got round to looking it up and it seems I have golfers elbow, which thinking about how I usually have my camera on a hand strap all day doesn't surprise me (with hindsight of course).

Have any of you good people had this and if so what did you do about it once you shook it off?

I have had tennis/golfers elbow, a course of steroids sorted it out for me

Thanks guys, I've just ordered a strap which should be here tomorrow.

I had a golfers elbow, although for me it was caused by playing baseball. I've had numerous physiotherapy. I've been fine, although I'm not at that level since I moved to the UK so who knows.

I wouldn't self diagnose something as important like that and go via the GP and medical route. Have it properly diagnosed and treated.

You're right of course, hopefully next week I'll be able to win the doctors lottery and do the ring at 8:30 every day with constant redial getting engaged until 9:00, when they tell you there's no appointments left and to ring back tomorrow!

Lol, I know but its why I don't even bother trying to get to the doctors anymore, working nights with that stupid no prebooked system doesn't help either, still I'm on holiday next week so perhaps then.

Not sure if this will help or not, but our local surgery does special appointments for people who work full time, but you do have to press for them. They are never offered up front.

Thank you, I'll try that

You're welcome, I hope it works for you. All I normally do is that when they offer me a 2pm or whatever, inform them I work full time and that its impossible for me to attend during working hours. At which point, miraculously, the diary opens up until 6pm.

GP's aren't necessarily the best people to go to for musculoskeletal conditions, chiropractors, physios and osteopaths may be a better option as they 'specialise' in musculoskeletal problems.

They are the route to get a referral ;)

If you have a really good Sports Medicine Clinic near you - it's worth contacting them - check the clinic out first - some are better than others [ of course ]

OK - they aren't free but they accept self referrals [ usually ] so you can get an appt. pretty quickly .

Thanks all, I'll stick to a GP though, its not all that bad and I've been wearing a pressure band thing for the last few days (except today when I forgot!) and its a fair bit better.

They are some stretching exercises you can do
Right arm out straight palm facing down, now turn arm 45 deg left so thumb now pointing down, now bend wrist so fingers are trying to Touch Inner arm,
What this does is to stretch the muscle in you outer arm.

Now hold arm out straight with inner arm facing up and bend wrist down, this is now stretching the inner arm muscle.

You must do both inner and outer muscle for this to work. Also use your other hand to help bend wrist.

Where the tendons attach to the bone on the elbow you need to massage really hard, this is painfull but as the tendons are so small at the point of connection to the bone blood flow is hard been so thin ( think threading a needle ).

I'll put my invoice in the post. :)

Also mostly known as Tennis elbow, I actual ripped mine of the bone playing squash, it took 7 years to mend without pain

Also try

Thank you, I'll try that tomorrow, well maybe not the torture pen ☺

It's like a tens machine that women use when given birth, once placed on the skin you move it around and the pitch gets higher, which indicates that's where the problem is, you then hold the button down it it sends small electrical pulse down which helps in the aid off healing.

Just stick a couple of drawing pins into your wrists, connect it to the mains, jobs a good one

You are not far wrong, when I first had acupuncture I had needles placed in my arm and what looked like a battery charger connected to the pins and a current sent down the needles deep into the muscle / tendon area :-)

This was done in a converted garage, all was good as the guy had just retired as head of the physio Dept at Basildon Hospital.

I would always take medical advice from the internet very cautiously, unless you can be sure they are from a medical professional. Whilst those exercises are quite useful for golfers elbow are you 100% sure it is golfers elbow? If it's something else deep tissue massage and cross friction may indeed make it worse. The first thing you need to do is get a proper diagnosis, after which you can decide on a treatment programme.

Nope, most are primary care physicians and you don't need a referral. GP's can't refer to Chiros or Osteopaths either as they are not part of the NHS although they can of course 'recommend' these therapies for the purpose of private health insurance. They can refer to NHS physio but you'll be waiting 6-8 weeks normally.

OP, the GP route is not a bad way to go at all. Assuming it is indeed golfers elbow, they can give you painkillers/anti-inflammatories and possible a referral to physio but with the waiting times as above. Some can actually perform cortisone injections themselves and this 'can' work very well for golfers and tennis elbow.

Yup saw my GP who DX tennis elbow and prescribed a course of steroids which he administered, worked a treat

All natural me, drugs are the very very very last thing I would use & steroids mess up your blood from a while.

I'm also lucky as I have access to Physio's from the rugby clubs I take for :-)

Tens machines are used for a great many things other than childbirth these days :-)
Great for effective pain relief when applied correctly but only for that.
They can't correct a problem, only disguise it temporarily :-)
As others have said I'd go the Dr route first for a clinical diagnosis and, if appropriate, referral to a musculoskeletal specialist. :-)

Refer recommend I don't know, nit picking. Ours referred us at a varying times to the chiro, to the osteopath, to the physio. Perhaps I've got the words wrong, but effectively we say the same thing. Go see you gp ;)

My tennis elbow stopped when I stopped leaning on my desk with my elbows.

I was using one back in '82 and I dont think I was giving birth. ( :D )
It did work very well TBH but that was for nerve damage.

No wonder it's worn down if you use it to bu..... Better not finish that sentence!!!

Well, I've been to the docs and it seems I misdiagnosed, but not by far - its actually tennis elbow, I was missing the tell-tale sore bit where it should be which is good obviously (less pain :))

Other than that I was spot on with your help - pressure band under the elbow on the inside, two/three ibuprofen a day (I was taking one, but to make it work as in inflammatory it needs to be a "course" which needs at least two at set times).
I asked about the electronic acupuncture and thats a good idea too and cannot hurt, she was quite impressed it was only £25.

I could of got a prescription, but there was no point as it would be roughly the same but cost a load more, the next stage would be a steroid injection, after that physiotherapy, but she thinks it'll clear up by itself anyway.

All good news and nice to know for sure what it is and even better that I wasn't doing myself any harm - whats even more impressive is that an internet self diagnosis didn't indicate I had a rare disease from the Amazon delta!

Glad you are 'sorted'

I personally have tried Steroid injections in the past - unsuccessfully :( So my route now is that when the known problem recurs and is needing more than just Ibuprofen and exercises I head to the Sports Physios and I go for Ultrasound - works for some and not others [ like steroid injections :) ]

My problem is Osteo Arthritis after some nasty elbow injuries and now other joints are affected too :(
