Any experts on Gold watches here?

I thinking of getting a nice watch with solid gold case and possibly bracelet, I know cant afford Rolex ( could get 400f2.8 and 600f4 for the price of 1 of them).
It would funded by long service awards so hence I want one from a traditional watch company with history. Also last a life time.
I am not sure if any of these companies are.
Tissot
Omega a bit pricy
Longines
Accurist reasonable prices
Rotary reasonable prices
Dreyfuss i have never heard of

I love a nice watch and my choice would be an Omega seamaster but it all depends on price so how much are you willing to pay as a gold bracelet watch will be in the 4 figure price bracket yet a leather or bi metal strap will vary from £250 to over a couple of k

There are certainly some watch enthusiasts here. Flash in the Pan I think?

I collect watches and i will give you similar advice as when someone asks about camera's lenses.
It's the movement not the gold, same as it's the glass that counts
Buy the best movement watch you can, try to get an analogue movement as well.
If you have a budget let us know and i will try to give you some recommendations.

Watches are incredibly personal items. To get some ideas check out ebay for designs that you like. You should be able to get a decent Omega Seamaster(my choice) from £300+.I agree with the previous post--get a good analogue jewelled movement and avoid quartz.
Pete.

You called ?

A gold Rotary or Longines watch will shed it's value quicker than Bank of Scotland shares. Gold Omegas aren't really a lot cheaper than similar Rolexes, but they don't hold their money as well. This is fine if you're buying secondhand, but not much fun if you're buying new.

It depends really on how much you're really planning to spend or your taste in watches, but something a stainless steel Rolex Datejust, with the right colour of dial will hardly lose anything over 10 or 15 years.

Alternatively, if it's a dress watch you're after a nice gold vintage Patek Philippe Calatrava can probably still be had sub £2k..

In terms of longevity, my Omega was presented to my Grandfather in 1971 for 50 years service (!!)

I now wear it almost everyday and it is a cracking watch. New strap and a service every couple of years and jobs a goodun. I'm no good on model numbers and names but this is gold with a leather strap. I also think it is a timeless design - even though it is older than me...

Mechanical Omega watches are brill, but being gold it probably cost the equivalent of £3000 or so back in '71, yet it's value nowadays will only be in the low hundreds. I'd still rather have your watch than a yellow gold Rolex President of any vintage though :gag:

Thanks for your input guys, i am looking for one in a solid gold case because i like that style most likely be leather strap to keep cost down. dont want plated case as that wears off in no time.
Not bothered about chronographs either
Also it would only be worn for best/dress
Certainly want to try and keep cost to 3 figures, so i think the real class/quality watches will be out of budget. :(
Not sure about getting second hand or not, may get a nicer watch that way

Well with Gold sitting at £637/troy oz (and a troy oz is 31g = 1/2 a mars bar or 3 fingers of kit kat) I think you will be very lucky to find a new solid gold watch for 3 figures.
