Going travelling and need to book hotels en route - any good sites?

I am going travelling to Eastern Europe then onto the Ukraine in August. I normally use Hotelopia.com and Booking.com to book hotels but they are not offering much choice. Does anybody know of any other sites similar to these?

I've used both Alpharooms.com and lastminute.com on the hop to save cash -the missus and I have on several occasions jumped a ferry to France and seen where the mood took us. We stayed in a town called Mechelen in Belgium in a 149 Euro room in a Novatel for £29, booking same day!!
