Going to the MotoGP at Donnington Park :)

I'm off to the MotoGP on the 20th June at Donnington Park with my brother and a couple of friends from work.

The ride up will be avoiding the Motorways and possibly a bit 'spirited'.

I'll be staying at a Hotel, so not quite so concerned about kit being pinched from my room during the night (as I might be with a tent).

I'm going to want to keep kit to a minimum, so for those who may have attended the MotoGP at Donny in the past should I be looking to take something like a 70-200 or 300 prime on a 5D? Also where would be a good place to get photos? (I'll be keeping kit to a minimum as I only have 1 rucksack for the entire weekend including a couple of changes of clothes)

(Alternatively I might take the G9 and leave the SLR at home).

Anyhow any advice as to kit / where to take photos etc would be much appreciated.

i am going down for the first ime also

i am taking the lenses i have, 18-135 for walkabout, 100-300 F4 for shooting

i know the other halfs dad has been going for years and he invested in a tool box with wheels on to carry his equipment around and has had no issues

as for places i think we are just wandering around to be honest to find somewhere

not bothering with pics on the sunday though, just watching the race i think
 
Last time I went to Donny I got myself up by the Melbourne Loop, that was for a BSB meeting last year.

I'd like to make a weekend of it too, taking photo's on Saturday and just watching the racing on Sunday. I wouldn't bother taking the G9 for trackside shots unless you're very good with it. Even the short shutter lag on the G9 may cause a few problems.

I like to take two lenses, 18-70 for close stuff and 70-300 for panning out on the track! :D add those to the D70 in a back pack and I'm a happy Ladybird!!!! :D :D :D

:lol: This is the British GP remember.... Normally guaranteed to be a "wet race" - or it has been over the last few years - so much so I didn't bother last year !

(Donington is awful when it's wet.......)

Yeah, Melbourne is good, although not at the red dot. I stood (as you look at that map) above it and to the right, ie: just after the hairpin, where it straightens out. You can then point back at the hairpin, and get those leaning over corner shots. The other place I usually go is onto the infield, anywhere bewteen Redgate and the 'old hairpin'. But have a wander round, as you're there for a few days, there are lots of decent (unobstructed) places to shoot from.

Forgot about that bit, Probably because it was so busy. Oh and watch out for wet paint on the handrails... Ruined my jacket :bang::lol:
 
I've never been to Donington park for MotoGP but understand there is no access to the paddock or pits area. Also last year access to Redgate was limited because of a grandstand was built for the weekend. Additional fencing was also added to the Esses!
 
personally i dont think the 300mm on it's will be long enough on the 5d, i used mainly the 400mm on a 40d.

Isn't that standard for pretty much every type of racing apart from low end club stuff? (unless you have the elusive media access...)

Given this is the same level as F1, are you truly surprised?? :thinking:
 
I only had my samsung with kit lens last year when i took this shot throught the fence on the exit from mcleans lens at 200mm with a slight crop after :thumbs:

I've never been to the Moto GP before, but the paddock area was open to the public during the BTCC and BSB weekends. Obviously, the pits is a nogo for the general public.
 
Love the picture Macky. I've never noticed before how the stickers on the rear swing arm are aligned so that they are completely horizontal when he pulls a wheelie. Genious!

I cant wait to go this year, always a treat to hear those things. I dont mean to p**s on anybodys parade but last year I dont think Joe public (or maybe it was just the old man and me they didnt like the look of? :lol:) were allowed any further past the 'R' on hairpin, let alone round to the exit of it. Its a great shame as the exit of the hairpin is the best place to take pics from.

My best shot from last year came as i tried, mostly in vain it has to be said, to catch wheelies as they came under the dunlop bridge. I'll try and post it when i figure out how :lol:
