Hey,

I'm off to the Isle of Wight this weekend for the classic car shows in Newport and Ryde, but I'll have a bit of time to kill and wondered if there was anything interesting on the island I could see/photograph. An excursion to the Needles is planned, any more inspiration would be appreciated :D

Cheers

There is the Steam Railway if you're into vintage transport.

Carisbrook Castle and Osbourne House also provide a range of options.

+1 for Carisbrooke, a very moody and interesting castle with excellent views.

There's a decent zoo as well if memory serves.

If you are going to the Needles be warned you can't drive up there and have to park (for £4 IIRC) in the car park at Alum Bay. It's a fairly easy uphill walk to The Battery which is National Trust run.

Well worth a visit though.

If you go to the needles try out the chair lift thingy, it's an experience to remember
We went there last year and one of the nicest places we found was Compton Bay, there's nothing there as in shops etc but is a great beach both to walk along and for photography, there's a small car park just off the road and a small walk down to the beach, opposite side of the island to Cowes and just round from the needles. The place is a complete contrast from north to south, if you want somewhere busy go to Cowes, somewhere quiet go the other side.
Enjoy your visit

I'll be staying in East Cowes and will be in Newport on Saturday and Ryde on Sunday but have space inbetween for driving and exploring. Not sure about the chairlift, I get funny about getting in elevators let alone those :p

Or there's an open top bus which goes up to the top.

Newtown should be near the top of your places to visit list. This is what it looked like on Monday...

And there is a beer festival in Yarmouth over the weekend (with a good band playing on Saturday!).

The railway is a nice little line, albeit it doesn't actually go from anywhere to anywhere in particular. Havenstreet is nice though and worth a visit.

I grabbed a few shots of the rotting remains of the paddle steamer Ryde on the River Medina when I was there a couple of years back, not sure if it's still there now.

Bembridge is nice as well if you like coastal seascapes. We were fortunate to have a nice sunset when we were there, pity I only had my mobile phone on me to record it:(

Most of it is still there - the majority of it is rust!
