Going to tenereif, whats needed?

Hey all.

I'm off on Holiday to Tenerief in September. Just wondering if someone can give me a heads up on what to take...

Taking a ND8 filter - need to get a grad but what level?
taking my both lenses, 18-55 and my 70-300, a decent tri-pod, and triggers etc.

Can you guys think of owt else I'll need?

A pile of good books. There is not a lot to see in Tenerife apart from the large volcano. It's a concrete jungle apart from scrub land and the imported beaches.
I was very disapointed with the togging oportunities when I was there. I was in the south mind you next to the PGA golf course.

I suppose it depends on what you like to shoot and what your expectations are. I was hoping for old world type of stuff of which I didn't find any, not saying it's not there mind you, just hidden from the casual tourist like me.

Did find a few good places to eat and drink.

well whatever you forget camera wise just walk in to any camera shop and I'm sure you can pick it up for next to nothing if you haggle. I once bought a monopod for 15 euros all the way down from 75 euros
 
Fair play!

I'm confused with ND filters now lol.

I have a solid square ND8, but I want a Grad, but confused what'll be best to have for mainly sunsets... any pointers?

forgot to mention I have a Cokin P series filter set.

i spend 5 weeks a yr over there. feb may and 3 weks in nov dec
its a great island for photography, but you need to get off the sun lounger and get out and about, hire a car and you can get all over the island, loads of little coastal villages and places you will only see if you get a car
up in the mountains in the teide national park. the are loads of lunar style landscapes.
get up teide for sunrise or stay late for sunset, they are spectacular.you are way up above the clouds
also if you stay for sunset hang around till it goes dark as the star trail images with teide in the background are amazing . or park up near the observatory and photograph the buildings with star trails

it does get cold up there at night or early morning. we take blankets and flasks of coffee and loads of food,

up around masca is nice but winding mountain roads.
there is lorro parque up north, with loads of birds of prey and killer wales , dolphins and more
or take a 5hr boat trip to see if you can locate dolphins in the wild
santa cruz the capital as loads of interesting buildings
oh and not to forget amazing sunsets . from most of the resorts

i take a lot of my gear, zooms wide angles. extra memory cards unless you have a laptop or portable hard drive.
as for tripod. i bought a cheap velbon in one of the electrical shops. not brilliant but lightweight and better than nothing, and i leave it over there with freinds who live there
the photography shops are now not good value. prices are a lot dearer than over here. and the exchange rate is not very good. if you see anything you fancy check it carefully and if possible research it at an internet cafe before buying.

with all the places to see you wont have any time to lounge around the pool
 
reflector - black volcanic rock is not the slightest bit reflective
 
just got back from Tenerife myself. Definately hire a car! we did, and some of the places we stopped at that if you was on a coach you'd simply pass. Mount Teide is stunning. A park worth checking out is Jungle park. they fly dozens of birds around all at once, as well as singularly. Loro parque is a really good day out. Dolphin show, seal show, killer whale show. all excellent!
 
Tenerife is a fantastic place ecologically speaking. I went there on a field trip some years ago due to the different types are area within the island. You can go from desert to lush broad leaf forest and then to pine forest. Mainly in the north of the island as this is less tourist orientated. Get in to the pine forest near to the volcano as they have some of the purest air you will find with lichens growing off the trees. You will definately find something to photograph if you get out and about as others have said.

las americas. busy place, lively at night as well, just be careful .
ok sorry dont mean to scare you , tenerife is not a dangerous place but like anywhere in the world there is always people looking to rob you.
ive been going to tenerife 3 times a year for the last 12 and we have never yet had a problem.
if you are photographing street scenes at night, better to do it early evening when there are lots of people around. and make sure someone is with you to watch your back,
common sense really. but same sort of advice that applies to here as well.

if you are not bothering with a car this is a trip worth doing, someone already mentioned it earlier, great for birds of prey close up without bars or cages
and its only about 15 mins on the free coach from las americas

oh and watch out for the timeshare idiots. they can be a real pain
with their stupid scratch cards. dont fall for it or you will spend most of the day at a building site. best to just ignore them and carry on walking., not worth wasting your breath telling them no

very nice mountain range and very quiet roads compared to teide. all the tourists are up teide

get a car and there is no stopping were you you get to

There are some bits round the Veronicas I'd be wary of at night with or without camera gear. I stopped going a few years ago, didn't really like the way the place was filling up with Eastern European gangsters, pimps and general lowlife, I mean there are already enough British ones :naughty:

thats what i was trying to say without sounding too alarming

id say early evening is ok, but later on definitely a no no
better off up at torviscas or closer to los cristianos
veronicas is a dump

no dont do that, you will regret it
just be careful. you are on holiday relaxed and probably off guard.
just a bit of common sense and you will be fine, you will love it
 
We're off to Los Christianos in September... our apartment has an awesome view over the harbour - can't wait for the sunsets :D
 
0.9 soft grad is my favourite, sometimes I add 0.6 on it. I rarely use hard, but for sea they are good if you position it very precisely.

BTW, please don't laugh. If you have a dark non-reflective wallet, sheet of paper or whatever and do a long exposure - you can blank a portion of frame for a few seconds. With a bit of practice it works a treat, and is free.

Don't forget, Lightroom has software grad filters. +/- 1 stop can be easily done.

nd hard grads have a prominent thick line between the dark and light were the soft ones just fade away
this is a quick one of a soft 0.9 and hard 0.9 not a good pic reflections spoiled it . but you get the idea

You just need to be streetwise, take notice of where you are and the sort of people that are around, make sure the gear is insured just in case.
