I realise there are probably endless places for photo taking in Scotland but are there any that I shouldn't miss?

Going at the end of September and going, sort of, Loch Lomond/Fort william/Skye/Applecross/Inverness/Brechin/Edinburgh or whatever takes our fancy but generally in that sequence.

Will have my mountain bike so hoping to go a bit off of the beaten paths.:)

At Fort William, you could take your bike up the Annoch Mor gondola and ride down I think. Should get some good views from the top, assuming it's not clouded over.

Loch Quoich near Glen Garry is beautiful and remote.
On Skye, Elgol of course ;) and Glen Brittle and Talisker Bay.
Take a look at http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/ for some excellent information on walks all of Scotland's Highlands. :)

On the way back from Skye, take a short detour from Kyle of Lochalsh to Duirnish to see Highland Cattle in the street. Then onwards to Plockton, which always worth an hour of anyone's time.

Ahhh now for that kind of route you could do a lot worse than have a chat with EdinburghGary. He has organised two tours of Scotland now, one winter one summer and thay have both taken in a lot of that route. I managed a few days of the winter one and we had a great time. :)

Ok, Loch Lomond and Ben Lomond are the first really interesting bits you will hit on your way North, A82 takes you North via Glencoe and there is some smashing stuff round there. Over to Skye where you already have some suggestions. :)

Applecross is brilliant, one of the best beaches I have ever been on, Loch Torridon and Loch Maree are both lovely. Have very fond memories of standing outside campers at midnight admiring the stars. :) The Cairngorms and Ben Nevis are also worth a slight detour on your way south. If you are interested in wildlife there is some stunning stuff around there.

Edinburgh is a lovely city and there are some nice sights in the Borders around Melrose on the way down.

I was born in Scotland and only moved south when I was in my 20's. I was very lucky to have the chance to go walking in quite a lot of it growing up. I still love heading North, even in winter.

Hope you enjoy it :)

I have seen some stunning shots from Rannoch moor, which you will most likely pass on the way up north. It all depends what interests you the most I guess.

If your going to include Edinburgh in your ourney you should head out to East Lothian for at least a day. Places like North Berwick and gullane are definetely worth a visit.

Gondola shuts on the 13th of September this year to bikes I think unfortunately.

There's Glentress and Innerleithen just south of Edinburgh though for riding, should be able to get some decent shots in the Tweed Valley too and if you're feeling particularly fit from the top of Glentress there's some cracking views, but I wouldn't want to climb up there on a bike carrying an SLR kit, but maybe I'm just unfit. :D

Shame about the Gondola :(
Looking at your potential route, the drive from Loch Lomond to Fort William will take you accross Rannoch Mor and through Glencoe if you take the A82. Plenty of dramatic landscapes to snap on the way. Have a look at the Glencoe website for details of mountain biking and hiking routes.
Skye seems to have been covered pretty well by other posts, but the Cullins are worth a look as well. There's also the Talisker distillery :hic: ;)
If you're off to Applecross, Torridon isn't too far away and will provide some stunning scenery.
You could travel accross to Inverness via Loch Ness. There's heaps to do there: Walks, bike trails, boat trips, visitors centre etc... The A82 from Fort William to Inverness is part of the Great Glen cycle route as well if you're into that kind of riding.

If you are going to get to Skye via the Mallaig ferry then take time to drop off the new route and take the alternative coastal route. Its only about 5 miles but you will go a long way to find better beaches and views of Skye, Eigg, Muck and Rum. Also just before you get back on the main road you come to the Silver Sands of Morar which are worth an hour or two.
Hope you enjoy the trip you lucky **"$%****%% %%^**&&, I've been back since saturday and wnat to go back NOW.

Pretty much the same as us then, as we're going across to Brechin for a few days as that's where my missus is from.

We'll have to compare when we get back then. :)

Hi mate...

A bit late in adding things in here... and the boys and girls above have covered about everything... but there will still be thousands of other places too... I always find the best places are ones I simply stumble upon anyway!

What I would say to you is that there is no way you will manage to do all suggested in one week if its a week you have... never actually noticed your timescale... Also many of the places are best shot early or late and do your travelling through the day... the problem with that is lack of sleep! I guess all im saying is dont try to do too much... and if you have a week only then I'd almost say due to the distances involved in simply driving from place to place... time needed for eating and sleeping and just getting your initial bearings in a place... you wont have much time left for your photography... If its tip top images you are after... which we all are... and you want a nice holiday as well as a photography trip... then you will struggle with your first route in my opinion! However if you have two weeks... its perfect! Honestly will be a fab route with the suggested other places above... Dont try to go North of Inverness at all though... In fact for photography... skip Inverness completely and come down the A9... Aviemore and then Perthshire... Visit Loch Rannoch and Rannoch Station... Then down to Edinburgh stopping for fish and chips in Callander.

I should add... you cant do Loch Rannoch and Rannoch Station from the Glen Coe road on your way up to Forth William... They are the other side of the Moor... It's obvious on a map... and on the road out of Loch Rannoch, Queens View is a good stop... def over shot by every tourist... and not much scope for a different shot from the viewpoint... but at the same time... stunning... if not one of the best views in Scotland!

Mark

nah, not a chance imo - but different things for different people and all that

Maybe I should have said one of the most steriotypically picture postcard views in scotland!

But I agree each to there own!

I lived in Brechin for most of my childhood - whats your missus name - might know her?

If heading north from Brechin say to Aberdeen/Banchory etc, rather than taking the A90 Dualer, go via Cairn O Mount - great views for photos.

Make sure the weather is good though - my missus and I went up 2 weeks ago as she had never been but weather wasn't great and when we got up there it was so foggy that we had to turn around.

Its amazing though when the weather is right.

Her name is Noble, and her mother's name was McKenzie.
Her Dad seems to know everyone in the whole town everytime we go up!:)

dont forget the forth bridges..if you can get to queensferry south

I used to know a male Noble - can't mind his first name now.

You can ask him if he knows or has heard of the Gibbs family (if he does then not for bad reasons I hope )

Just go and enjoy it, take it as it comes, always something to see and photograph, I go up quite a few times a year, and not seen a fraction of it, the further north, the better, it all depends on what you want, my favorites, Fort Augustas, Cairngorms, Black Isle, Culross, Glen Coe, someone said The Forth Bridge (don't know about now, but a month ago it wasn't a nice sight, covered in tarpaulin) I called at Kelso, the Falkirk Wheel for a couple of hour, but don't forget the Midge spray

Forth Bridge is undergoing a major refurb until 2011. Infact hopefully august 2011. I work on the bridge for the contractor responsible for the work. I apologise about the tarpaulins... It's actually encapsulation which allows us to create a controlled enviroment in which to give it a proper paint. I wont bore you with the technical details. But basically we grit blast it back to original steel then give it a new coat of paint which is a glass flake epoxy. The reason we have to encapsulate is the keep the grit... which gets contaminated during blasting with the old lead based paint from falling into the sea ... and then keep the weather out so we can paint the new system on to a quality that should last the next 25 years without further major maintenance. Unfortunetely the old urban myth about starting one end... finishing... then starting again is untrue... the bridge historically only ever got touch ups and small repairs done... it was constantly touched up but only with rust knocked off and overpainted... So as photographers we will have the bridge back for 25 years without bandagesin 2011... but that's up to Network Rail... and putting my site managers hat on... please be patient and thankyou for putting up with the inconveniance we are causing just now.

OK then, how about the Hebrides? We're going there next week. Mind you, I suspect it would be easier to list the non photogenic parts:thinking:
