Yes
I'm off to New York this weekend. A birthday present from my generous mother and Father :D
The wife and I are going and leaving both sets of Grandparents to look after the children for the weekend :woot:
We are flying out from Stanstead on 'Max Jet' business class :) and will be staying in the Bryant Park Hotel (swanky!)

We are going to book the Empire State Building before we go and do that on Friday night once we have settled in.
Our intention is to walk over to Grand Central Station on Saturday morning just to have a look (photo opportunity)
Walk up 5th Avenue, trying not to get sucked into all the expensive stores.
Shopping around Central Park, Bloomingdales etc.
Horse and Carriage ride in Central Park (photo opportunity)
Times Square on Saturday night (photo opportunity)

Those are the only plans we have at the moment. We fly back on Sunday night, so it's only a quick visit.

Has anyone been before and any advice, photographic or otherwise.

Wow! That is some trip - I am so jealous!! Love New York.

Advice wise ...

- Deffo book the Emp SB before you go - it will save you loads of time. You can pay to jump the queue too - not cheap, but worth it if in a hurry. Don't take any tripod up with you as they will take it off you at security.

- grand central - do take a tripod and a fairly wide angle lens - light can be low - but there's some great snaps to be had.

-5th ave is a long walk with some expensive shops - but very nice. Rewarded with one of my fave NYC places at the top -Central Park - wear comfy shoes!!!! Horse & carriage ride expensive - but if it's your first time, then it's a must! (Did it on honeymoon ;) ).

- time square - tripod job - get some car trails in the lights !!!

Other than that, if you want to try and get som good skyline shots with the ESB in it, visit the Rockerfeller Centre. Brooklyn bridge also offers stunning views and is a nice walk.

So much to do - so little time!!!

Shopping wise ... Calumet or B & H photo offer very good prices. Pop in and bring me a Sigma 17-70 back and a Sigma 150mm please ;)

I am sure you will enjoy, NYC is a great place - been there several times and still can't enough!!

Have fun, hope this helps.

Camera bag is going as hand luggage, I'm packing the tripod in the hold.
Won't be alot in our suitcase on the way out :D

I've only got my Finepix s7000 so will have to make do with the lens on that.

I did casualy mention to SWIMBO about investing in a new DSLR while out there but It was met with a stoney "we would not be able to run to that" reply :'(

Still i will be able to get some good enough shots with that.

I fancy trying some slow shutter speed stuff at Grand Central with commuters rushing around and deffo some slow shutter speed shots in Time Square on Saturday night.

That is always supposing I can get the wife to put up with my amateur photographic efforts.

Gotta get a new compact flash at Stanstead though, mine is only 256mb

top of Rockefella (think thats how its spelt) amazing views of E.S.B etc.try this in the evening as the lights start to come on all over New York:thumbs:..Just fantastic:thumbs: once again tripods not allowed but you can easily rest camera on safety barrier..excellent..off to travel agent in morning:eek:gotta go again:love:

You'll have to let me know how you get on and give me some advice when you get back as me and hubby are off out there on 17th Nov! It'll be our first trip too!

Can't wait!! :)

I was in New York a while ago, things you must do:

Staton Island Ferry - the best bit is it's free.
Central Park - Is huge and very nice.
Macy's - look out for bargains, got a £220 Mountain Equipment jacket for £30!
Empire States Building - Both a day and night.
Wall Steet - Just to say you've been.

I'll get round to editing my pics and post a thread :)

Lucky you. Its ages since him and me went....but I'll never forget it.

Try to do an open top bus sightseeing trip and mark all the places on a street map that you fancy going back to, as the guide mentions them. We went back to the leather district and got fantastic leather jackets for our sons...(on the phone checking arm lengths was a hoot)!

Also did loads of walking (wear really comfortable footwear) especially around Greenwich village . Found a great place (bar) at lunch time and went back in the evening for a blues/jam band session...fantastic!! Felt safe the whole time, even when walking around the streets at night. Check out the ceiling in grand central....been cleaned and looks great! Yellow cabs are great too.

Have a great time.

Taken with a point and shoot.....

You must do the helicopter trip round New York, iirc they go from the southern end of Manhattan (I think near Brooklyn Bridge) and they are great fun - worth every penny.

If you want to go out for a good meal try Robert de Niro's restaurant. it's called Tribecca Grill and was very good. We were in NYC about 10 days after the second Gulf War started and a lot of the Americans were very pleased to see us so consequently we had a marvellous time. We also visited the site of Ground Zero which was one of the strangest places I've been to, all around us the city was buzzing but it was deathly quiet at the site, I thought it was just me but we heard others commenting on it as well.

Ground zero now has a very very good display of photographs taken from the Sept 11th attack.

Well worth a look if in the area - pictures that will stay with your forever IMHO.

I went there in April for 5 days, bloody freezing. Stayed right on Time Square( you cant take a bad picture of Time Square)
Comfortable shoes are a must if your wife likes to shop.
Dont stop, fit as much in a possible. Have a great time

I Guess you already left:lol::lol:

Oh b****r, have you already been? I had loads of advice!!!! :)

I made this quick list for a friend of mine, she is going in December...

• Empire State Building day and night
• Horse and carriage ride around Central Park. Carriages tend to line up in front of the Plaza Hotel
• Visit the Plaza Hotel (Home Alone was filmed here and its where CZJ and Michael Douglas got married, its at the very far corner or Central Park)
• NY Knicks basketball game at Madison Square Garden. Eat hot dogs and drink beer just for the experience ;)
• Toys R Us at Times Square to ride the huge indoor themed Ferris Wheel
• Helicopter Ride around the Statue of Liberty, the one that lasts about 10-12 minutes is plenty
• Century 21 opposite Ground Zero
• FAO Schwartz (toy store)
• Ice skating at Wollman Rick in Central Park. You can ice skate at Rockefeller Center, but its quite expensive, and will be rammed at Christmas
• Go see a show, I've never had chance to but by all accounts they are amazing. I've heard The Lion King is awesome
• Have a pretzel from a street vendor

Good list Betty.

I can proudly claim to have done ALL of them (with the exception of the Lion King - we saw 42nd Street). Here's my thoughts for anyone who's interested ......

ESB - a must. It's New York.
Horse & Carriage - see above.
Plaza - currently being refurbished. May be open now, or very soon.
Knicks - boring to watch (our game was 4 hours long!!!) - but worth it for experience.
Toys R Us - cracking. A bit like camera shopping - you will spend a fortune!
Chopper ride - brilliant - another must.
Century 21 - great if you love shopping and cheap prices. Your worst nightmare if you don't!!! (Luckily I love bargain hunting!!!)
FAO Schwartz - with that and Apple next to each other, it's hard on the wallet!!! ;)
Ice skating * central - did that on honeymoon * xmas time - very romantic!!! Although we did wait until the last night in case there were any broken arms / legs or other bits that you may use on honeymoon ;)
Shows - a must I suppose. Not my cuppa, but the wife loved it! Get tickets cheap from the TKTS booth.
Pretzels. MMMMMM pretzels!!!! Or those caramel nuts things!!!!

Cheers

Anth.

PS - has the original poster been yet ? ;)

Thanks Betty, you've helped me with my 'To do' list for November!

If you are there in November Scrazzy, and driving, add a little trip to Woodbury Common outlets.

Not far out of New York (about an hour northwards).

You will get all your xmas pressies and more!!!!

Just remember to take a spare suitcase and smile nicely through customs on the way back ;).
