Going to look at a Canon EOS-1n and apart from "buyer beware"?

Well, it's all up there in the title. I've long resisted the newer Canon film bodies as I don't find the "big curvaceous plastic" as aesthetically pleasing as the earlier smaller and more angular metal bodied SLRs. (Don't ask me about my EOS DSLRs though which I will not part with:naughty:)

I have seen a power winder equipped 1n which looks for all the world like a battery gripped EOS DSLR and I'm hugely tempted to go stick a lens on and see how it takes me. I know that there are batteries in the grip, I :naughty:know the asking price :rules:I won't know until I get there whether it comes with anything else or what kind of warranty/money back the vewndor might offer. Judging by the condition of the body generally and the hotshoe especially it doesn't appear to have led a hard working life.

Some of you older hands here might have handled a 1n and I'm asking I guess if there are any known issues with this professional body please.

Cameras which have potentially led hard professional lives, hmm. The key is wear on the inside, as exterior wear can be deceiving (sometimes). I don't know the design of the late Canon plastic bodies, but generally wear on the film pressure plate, around the film leader take-up, along the edges that the film runs along - depends how bad, but could be an indicator of heavy use. A lot of it will just be a subjective decision on the spot, really, and there is only so much you will be able to work out about the camera's life.

Is this a private seller or a shop seller? Possibly just ask them if they know the back story behind the camera re: ownership and use?
 
Just make sure it hasn't been anywhere near me and you should be OK ;)

Got really fond memories of the EOS1, at the time, years ahead of the competition.
Take a few rolls of cheap film with you, and run them through, making sure the leader is left out (in the custom functions) so you can reuse the film, then run a test roll through and take it to the cheapest D+P place you can find.
Have a look at the results, (try and use as many shutter speeds as you can.)

If everything looks OK and price is right then go for it.
 
If it was a 1v you can use a button press combination to tell you how many films its done... mine had done 11 when I bought it :)
 
Does it say which battery grip it has on it? Theres two types, the Power Booster PB-E1 which boosts the FPS to 6 and the Battery Pack BP-E1 which is lighter and only has a vertical shutter release on it.

(Or more unlikely is it permanently attached grip? That would make it a very rare EOS-1N RS with a pellicle mirror and capable of 10 fps with metering, AF etc)

Well, the camera has come home with me from a high street "turn your goods into cash" outlet, a national chain who actually provide 6 months' warranty :lol: Body, Power Drive Booster E1, batteries. Photos of the body and running reports and scans of images to follow. :lol: :lol:

And the most important question, how much was it?
 
Er, I think I'm in love all over again.

I love the heft of it, I love the sound of it, I love the controls of it (so far!) It all seems to work but we'll see how the film develops before passing judgement.

I love that it takes EF L lenses and I've got film 1 going for development and cd tomorrow.

How much was it? Okay, humour me: body with lens cap and strap, Power Drive Booster 1 and set of alkaline non-rechargeables, 6 months repair or refund warranty. What do we think?

Even though it's totally not the kind of camera I like to shoot with I'd still love to own one.

Totally agree. Whilst I enjoy the relative compactness of Canon FL/FD mount metal bodies, I'm afraid that my EOS DSLR bodies have to come big and chunky. Part of what I couldn't really get on with using much smaller, lighter bridge camera and compact bodies was the feeling of depressing the shutter button and the whole body moving in my hand.

And, guess what, there's a custom function on here to enable back button focussing.:clap::clap: This is becoming very instinctive. Today another film:wave:

It isn't so whilst I'm still working through the manual online, I don't believe I have that luxury.

Considering the outlet from which you purchased... I'm going to guess you got change from a ton, if the staff are clueless (very possible, a mate of mine bought a new fluke non-contact thermometer, calibrated for less than a decent round of drinks form a similar emporium) you may have got quite a bit of change.

looks lovely though, a mate of mine who is a pure nikon man through and through picked up my 1v last night and said he thought it was rather nice.
 
the 1v is an absolute cracker though Bill - the only body i'm slightly tempted to abandon my eos3 for (well not abandon - but certainly work alongside it!)
 
In the hand though the 1n is just as nice, has that proper chunky reliable pro body feel, its what is leaning me towards an older 1Ds instead of a 5D for my next digital upgrade.

That was going to be my guess as well, but I cheated slightly and had a look a the Cash Generators site, and seeing they have a T90 for £39 I now think it might even be cheaper. Around £70-80 is my guess.
