hi all

i have a full canon DSLR set up am looking at sell it all, am getting a bit old to climb the hills now so decided to go for a bridge camera
the two i am thinking about are

panasonic fz100 or the canon sx30is

can anyone give any advise or guides

I did the same thing last year for the same reason. I was fed up lugging a 30D around while out hiking. I swapped to the then top of the range Canon SX1 IS. It was a lovely camera but I just couldn't get on with the electronic viewfinder. It also had a mega -zoom built in but there is no way I could hold it steady at full reach. It lasted about 6 months until I sold it and bought a lightweight SLR, a Canon 550D, but other makes are available of course.
 
Same here, went from a D700 and D90 to a canon SX1 IS.

6 months later the SX1 has been replaced by a 50D and a bagful of lenses again.
The bridge just cant cut it when you are used to a DSLR.
 
yep same here, DSLR to Bridge and then back again........twice :cuckoo:

best bet is to see if you can loan a bridge camera for a few outings so you know their limitations, I love the all in one solution I really do but the EVF no matter how good are not as good as the real thing and the fastest bridge in the world still feels slow compared..

I hear good things about the Canon G11(and I believe a G12 now) but they lack in the zoom range.
 
I hate carrying a DSLR for leisure and have grown very fond of our Panny G1 kit, very light and you can get blurry backgrounds as well!
 
500D or 550D, keep the 50mm, sell the rest and get a nice 17-50 F2.8

I thought the same thing. I bought a nice Sigma 17-50 f2.8 to go with my lightweight 550D and I was back to square one. The setup is heavy again! For hiking it is just too much additional weight for me to carry. I'd stick with one of the lightweight DSLR's and the kit lens e.g. 550D with 18-55mm IS or similar from the other brands.

Ahh the moral here is dont buy sigma.. the tamron is lighter around 430grms and the sigma 565 grams if memory serves me right, 135 grams doesnt sound a lot but it is if you dont want weight.. I mean thats nearly 5 ounces extra weight!
 
Have you tried the Fuji HS10. More Dslr sized, but with manual controls and lots of funky bits.
 
I started to wonder if I have done the right thing, I have the Panasonic FZ18 and bought a 500d, I recently started using the panny.
