Thought I'd make my first proper post on these forums a meaty one, so here goes...

At the end of 2005 I took a career break from my IT job and went away travelling around the world with my partner. While away I realised my desire to not continue in an IT career and that I would like to make my passion, photography, my job. I'm a strong believer in following your heart and so now that I am back in the UK that is what I intend to do.

Now there's a lot of different branches of photography and I have done a lot of soul searching to decide which I would like to go into and came up with a rough plan which is as follows:

Short term: get into whatever branch I can and earn money from photography from wherever it comes. The theory here being that as any professional area will be new to me there will be plenty of stuff for me to learn and even less interesting branches will still hold a lot of interest because it is new to me. As I gain more contacts and don't need to spread myself around quite so many different areas I can specialise and drop those areas of less interest to me. This will also be a good chance for me to learn what I enjoy the most rather than viewing it all through rose tinted spectacles and thinking how wonderful it might be.

I have decided that I am initially going to pursue wedding photography as I think I would really enjoy it as I most enjoy photography when I am in the zone and can just snap away looking for compositions and interest. I'm also pretty good with people and I think this would suit me well. I am taking the photos for the weddings of two friends later this year which should provide me with some good experience and a portfolio to move forwards with. I have contacted a few wedding photographers to ask to work as an assistant on a few shoots to gain experience but haven't yet had any luck, most seem to prefer to work alone, as would I. It is also pretty lucrative which has attaractions although I should add that I am not going into photography to make millions, I'm doing it because I love it.

I am also intending to list the cream of the photos from my travels with stock agencies and make some sales there. I would also like to gain some experience in event, studio and product photography and see how I enjoy them.

I would like exhibit some of my photos locally too and I also plan on writing some articles for photography magazines about certain parts of my travels, particularly the voluntary work I did in Madagascar.

Medium term: I did some work experience at a local paper for a week as a photo journalist and really enjoyed it. I enjoyed the aspect of having a loose brief and then seeing what you can make from the situation that you're given, however this was for a very small paper and I'm less sure that I would want to work for a big paper which appears to be very pressurised. I'm not quite so certain as I used to be but I do think a career in photojournalism would suit me well.

Long term: I term it 'artistic photography' for want of a better moniker. What I would most like is to have a name for myself and earn my keep through exhibitions, print sales and commissions from arts councils. That's the current dream and one that I don't expect to attain any time soon, but it is a goal none-the-less. I would also love to be a travel photographer, something that I do have experience in but that I also imagine would be very hard to get into, not that I'm scared of a challenge mind!

Other ideas that I can do alongside are postcards of local photography and calendars and the like.

Part of my problem is that I have a rather broad interest in many areas of photography and don't feel that I'm ready to make a specialisation, which from what I've read is one way to increase your chances of succeeding.

I am currently doing a bit of IT contracting, that will provide me with an income while I work on the photography side of things, hopefully I would be able to do IT work part time to take the pressure off needing to earn money from photography. I do think that if I just relied on photography for an income at first then I would fail and I also think I'd begin to enjoy photography less as there would be too much pressure in needing to make money from it.

Erm, and so the point of this message. I'm not really sure there is one. If anyone has some sage, or even unsage, words of advise I'd love to hear them. I guess I'm just using this forum as a sounding board for my ideas and would be interested to hear what people think of my plans, how realistic they are and their general thoughts are.

So, responses please!

All I'll say is good luck, and isn't it funny how the IT profession makes you want to look for alternative careers :)

Wow! You know how to get the cat firmly into the pigeons!

It is your life and you will know what financial and personal commitments you can make/forego.

Wedding photography can be lucrative, especially if you have the "eye" but you need to be sure you are being trully honest with yourself. Can you assess your work properly? If not can someone you know with relevant experience do this. You can always try here if you don't - let's see some of your work.

Papers will be demanding in terms of time commitment but their shots are often fairly dull so may not get your creative juices flowing.

Travel photography is a big market with many contributors at a VERY high standard. Do you have the eye (and equipment) to match up to this? If you do not have a different point of view you better have a lot of shots to make the mark.

On the positive side you seem prepared to mould yourself into something. this could be a good way to progress and once you find your own niche you can then control the work you do. Not any easy call, but you will already know this. I can only wish you luck in your endeavours!

Well, I could write a book on this subject, but not from my Blackberry. Lol. When I get home, I'll try to respond as completely as I can. So much to say!

Thanks for early replies!

As to the quality of my work, I uploaded every photo that I took on my travels to flickr but it needs some serious editing down and editing of the actual photos. If you're interested in taking a look they're here: http://flickr.com/photos/j-hob/. I am currently working on my own website and getting a smaller portfolio of properly edited photographs together. I don't really think that my flickr site paints a true reflection of me as a photographer as there is a lot of chaff there, similar photos of the same subject and holiday record shots. Also none have been post-produced and it feels rather like they're incomplete works that I'm not as happy at showing. I now spend a lot of time in post-production getting my photographs to be just how I like them.

I do think that I am a good photographer and have a definite eye for it. I wouldn't be considering this as a career if I didn't think that. What I lack at the moment is experience. I also recognise that I have an awful lot to learn, but then I never want to stop learning because getting better at something you love is just ludicrously great fun.

I am very self critical as well and can be very harsh on myself, rejecting photographs for sometimes inconsequential flaws. However that does work as an excellent way of improving. I have not yet taken a photograph that I am totally happy with and wouldn't change a thing in.

I have sold photographs before and have been published in the New York Times recently as well as having a book cover for the United Nations - http://www.amazon.com/Arms-Control-...3852019?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1175808083&sr=8-1. There is at least something of a market for my photos!

As for my kit, I currently have a nikon D70 which, when I have the money, will be upgraded to a D200 but only after I have the tamron 17-50 f2.8.

One thing that I forgot to mention in my original post is that I am very keen on working in photo documentary type work and have a couple of ideas for personal project that I will pursue later this year. I suppose you could call me a 'concerned photographer' - highlighting issues through the medium of photography and telling a story that way. I think that could be the ultimate for me.

Totally! I'd love to give it all up and do something I enjoy, and maybe one day I will, but at the minute I have too many financial commitments and worries to take that step (plus I think I need a lot more practise behind the viewfinder if I were to go in to photography!).

I've only been back in IT for just over a week and I know for sure it's not what I want to do long term. It feels very cold and soulless, lacking in passion. That said I am enjoying my job at the moment, probably the novelty.. and getting paid, that's good too.

all the best whatever happens ..but i hope you find what it is your looking for .. ie a name that precedes you...

I'm looking for something that I can get up in the morning and really look forward to doing that day. And I want that feeling every day. I want to be challenged and I want to learn and I want to smile. Lots. That's my goal and I think it can be best achieved through photography.

The grass is always greener on the other side, but it still needs cutting and watering, good luck m8 and if you reckon that you have the eye for the money shot, then why not give it a go, I mean, jeez what can be more boring than IT?.

So many people on here following their dream what with mini moving to Canada. I say if you can do it do it. The only way you'll find out it wasn't for you is to try. Good luck and I look forward to seeing more of you photos on the site.

You've just got to work hard and do what you can. You ever thought about doing a course at college or university? being in Edinburgh theirs alot of good colleges or universitys that do very good photography courses. I'm hoping to finish my degree in edinburgh in the next few years. Just remeber if its not good enough for you its not good enough for anyone to see.
