I've no idea if this is a regional expression but it takes on a new meaning given this news item..

Just what happens, how hard is one lashed and with what, and why 360 ?
How much worse is 360 than say 200 (yeah, I know it is 160 worse, but surely there comes a time when there is little more pain to feel...)
Is it a public spectacle, what happens if you pass out during the lashing - does it resume once you come round?

It sounds barbaric, but wow, it would make me think hard before committing a crime...

I agree, so don't have much sympathy, but it has raised all sorts of capital punishment questions in my head (not that I am planning any heinous crimes today..)
 
Interesting thing in that article is the bit at the bottom that reveals that Michael Gove has some decent principles in him. There's hope for us all (*).

Unfortunate for the gentleman concerned but if he NEEDED to drink, maybe he has bigger problems than a lashing will "cure". FWIW, I think it's pretty barbaric too but the penalty is hardly a secret.

Quite, his gout might be an indicator of why he took such a large risk.

He knew what he was doing.

Our country/government (of the day - any government) never criticises Saudi Arabia, so there cannot be anything wrong with their laws???:confused::(

Meanwhile the rest of us know that they are totally barbaric, so why leave anything to chance when you are in their country - simples!

Only himself to blame. Like it or not that is the rules of the country and to hear the excuses of family... If you do the crime be prepared to do the time!!

If you want to drink then don't live in Saudi!!!
 
Daft fool. Then again for all we know he got away with it for the last 25 years and this is he first time got caught. 360 is not too bad then.

Punishment is not a secret so no sympathy from me at all.
 
He's an old man, 360 lashes may kill him, hardly a just punishment for illegal drinking. Justice without compassion or mercy is seriously flawed. Besides I doubt the punishment will be administered.
 
It isn't being administered. It is confirmed.

Hooray one set of justice for the old and frail and another for the young and fit. Or did we promise the Saudi government something else in return.

For someone who has lived there so long the punishment should take that into account in my opinion. It's a farce this way lacking consistency.

And much of the region is out of date by around 2000 years.

WooHoo! All praise the gracious Saudi government for stopping something hideous that we didn't know they were doing (and that they almost never do anyway). I really do wonder who is managing this story - us (to divert people from other stuff) or them (to embiggen themselves).

After all Saudi Arabia is chairing the UNHRC at the moment. Maybe it's opposite day.

[Edited to correct typo - UNHCR is something totally different which of course SA have nothing to do with....]

When in Rome and all that, as for the argument the old guy might have NEEDED a drink then i would have thought Saudi Arabia might just be the wrong country to live in

But he was quite happy to live in the country that show little compassion or mercy,for the last 25 years :confused:
 
My girlfriend has just been over to Saudi Arabia for a week working, and the country very much works on the basis of 'these are the rules, they aren't a secret' so you can't go around saying you didn't know any better when you have a drink. Whether or not we think their rules and lifestyle are barbaric and out of date, it's how they run their country, so if you don't agree with it - don't go!

Or you could come here, and still live by the rules of a country that you claim to love but dont work or live there.
 
So basically we are all in agreement then, the punishment of 360 lashes for breaking an alcohol drinking law is barbaric.
Well publicised and still in place so you know not to do it unless you're completely barmy, but still barbaric?

Glad that's cleared up.

Of course it's completely barbaric, however if the rule and punishment is openly advertised as this is then you've basically accepted the potential punishment when you commit the crime. You can't start shouting about how barbaric it is at a later stage.

When my girlfriend was there, she was moved out a queue in McDonalds because she is a woman and it was men only queue - do I think it's bonkers in 2015 that a woman should be treated as a 2nd class citizen? Of course I do, but those are the rules of the country and you have to abide by them.

Listening to the lunch-time phone in, I wonder why he made his own anyway, if the callers are to be believed, its not that difficult to get hold of alcohol out there.
Also to be stop and searched is apparently pretty rare, other callers were saying that "he may have been set up"
Again, sounds strange as he's been there 25(?) years.

Alcohol is certainly tolerated in the compounds housing only overseas workers.
In Riyadh anyway.

As I suggested, he may have been doing it for 25 years, didn't pay off the local chief this time and they thought enough is enough.

Thats exactly what my friend living and working over there is finding. Its tolerated among the ex-pat community as long as they don't 'share the love' with the locals. She's just gone back for her third2 year stint working there so I imagine its not all bad
