I'm off to Lanzarote in a little over 2 weeks. Being that we are staying in Puerto Del Carmen, I've decided that after the many other times of going there and not going to the end of the runway to capture the low flying planes into Arrecife, that I would this time.

Now I really want to take my camera with me and not just the compact, but in reality it will probably be left in the room most of the time as I will be chasing round after my 22 month old daughter :)

So for the hassle of taking it just for about a couple of hours do you think it will be worth it?

I willbe gutted not taking it but I will be even more gutted if it gets damaged / stolen.

Cheers

Simon

If you are going to spend most of the time looking after a very energetic toddler - don't risk it - take the compact and leave your good stuff at home [ but make sure it's well protected ]

I have a two boys 1 and 5 and the most useful thing to have in this situation is the approval of your partner.

Do you get time off on your own to take photos ??

My wife appreciates the time and effort I take to produce nice pictures of the kids and I get time off to photograph on my own.

If you are not in this situation then I would say take the compact as you will feel hard done by if you "have to leave the camera in the room".

Only been to Lanzarote once, would love to go back (without kids :D)

I';d take it! If you love pics and your camera then you'll want it there, just take some basic stuff. Great chance to get some good pics of the family, to treasure forever.

Get insurance that covers it, then it doesn't matter as much if it gets stolen etc. Then enjoy it :)

Take it. I take my D300 everywhere as I would hate to think 'if only I had it'.

I have a 2year 4 month old and yesterday me and him got the train to London to see my grandparents, just took my Lowepro with camera gear in and a couple of nappies, wipes, cerial bar and drink. In the end, didnt use it but did use camcorder. Previous time I did use and got some great outdoor shots.

When we went to Cornwall in June I took it everywhere. Most shots were snapshots rather than thinking too much about the shot, but they still look better than most peoples holiday snaps.

Make sure its insured and get some great images.

If you do take it - remove your card and put it somewhere safe if you leave your gear unattended in the Hotel room - just in case - that way you won't lose any photos if the worst happens .

I have a £2500 single item limit on my house insurance with Barclays, so it is covered! but I know what insurance companies are like and how they try their hardest not to pay out!

I'd say take it, trim the kit down to luggable, make sure its covered insurancewise which it sounds like it is (but I advise checking!) and take it!

If you don't then I reckon you will regret it at some stage :)

And you'll get some fab shots of your daughter I'm sure!

Well thinking about I could cut it down to the basic kit equipment (body and 18-105) and use my small case that basically just holds the camera with the lens and some memory cards, then put the charger in the suitcase. I could then put the camera in a normal bag and it wouldn't be obvious I had it then i guess!

i was in lanzarotte in feb, took my 50d and rented 10-22 with me. just slung it in a backpack and took it everywhere with me during the day , left it in the room safe on a night. no problems

Does your house insurance cover definitely include cover abroad? I am looking for cover abroad and can't find any travel insurance that will cover more than £500 for a single item.

its insured, take the camera and 18-105 then your set for a good range, should get some nice holiday "snaps" without needing all the kit, dont bother with anything other than camera - lens - batteries and cards then you wont be as worried about it! and just sling it over your shoulder and take it everywhere...
