For years I had a succession of compacts, culminating in a Canon G7.

Last September I saw the light and started using DSLRs. First a 350d, closely followed by a 30d and now a couple of 40d with some L lenses to match.

The G7 was sent to a new owner via ebay within a week of going down the DSLR road.

As time has gone by though I've really missed the compact qualities of a camera which would fit in a pocket.

So I bought a G9.

Observations.

This camera will fit in my pocket unnoticed. Good

The controls are very similar to my DLSR, Good.

Anything above ISO 400 is way too grainy. Bad

Great programmable self timer. Good

This camera is sloooooow. Slow to start up, and shutter lag, yawn.

Poor DOF blur.

You can get some good shots, though I think I'll need more practice before I nail the great shots.

In summary a compact is good. :)

About 18 months ago I bought a Ricoh R6 compact for those times when a DSLR was not appropriate or too heavy.
It got used for a while, I enjoyed having a pocket sized camera, that was good.
I didn't enjoy how imprecise electronic zooms are
Or the noise at ISO400

Now, well it is sitting on my desk in it's leather case - and has been for quite some time now. The DSLR has won the day again.

I compliment my D90 with a Panasonic LX2 also use a Nikon P&S , horses for courses !

I use my Panasonic FZ8 all the time, it's light convenient and takes great pictures, admittedly not to the standard of the DSLR but very usable never the less. I wouldn't be without it.
