Good morning guys

I hope you are all well on this very sunny morning, or if the clouds are in your way, blow them away.

I am going away to Malta in June for 17 days. I am looking to take my D7000 with the following lenses

18 - 105mm Kit Lens
35mm 1.8
24 - 70mm
70 - 300mm

Possibly my Tripod, Unsure yet.

And possible wide angle lens unsure yet.

I literally have not taken this camera abroad before, and I want to create images which will last a life time, due to my girl friends family being Maltese plus their rather a big family in Malta (I think).

If any of you can suggest anything that I need to "check off" before going away let me know please.

Thank you :)

Dan

Try and carry as much of it (carefully). I wouldnt trust any airport to not damage my kit. I took a packet of cookies once and put it in my suitcase. Bad idea.

I'd be happy to carry the kit for you if you have a spare seat on the plane? :)

As Carl mentioned, make sure you have the Camera & Lenses as carry on - which means checking any size and weight limits your airline might have relative to your camera bag.
Camera batteries also need to be carry on.
As with any trip, make sure you have spare batteries and memory cards, and for 17 days you'll need charger (and power socket converter).
You may want to consider some form of backup option for the shots you take while away - if you're taking a laptop then a USB hard drive works well.

The tripod, if you take it, should be fine in the hold baggage (indeed, it might be a problem with carry on) - depending on the model of tripod a trick like removing the centre column (with head) can mean an otherwise oversize item will fit into your suitcase.

I`d love to have an assistant carry my stuff and be security for me xD!

Thank you for your friendly advice though, Im just worried if they will not let me on the plane, or I wont be able to take it on the place with me. Its not often I go abroad so im looking for advice, in terms of what to do and not to do kind thing :)

maybe also consider weight. Do you need 3 lenses covering the 18-105mm FL?

Hi Faldrax, thank you for your advice.

I think I will take my tripod depending on the weight of the airline, I ask my partner and she said its about 20kg, were going with Air Malta. Im just looking at more memory cards now tbh, I don`t want to be editing whilst im away. My laptop cant handle anything in regards to editing, although my PC on the other hand is made for it. I am taking a laptop, 4gb Ram etc, but I know it`ll do just to back things up like you said. I`ll figure it out :)

If poss, I always take a tripod.

Tripod can go in the hold luggage - its far less likely to get stolen or broken than cameras and lenses - put it in the middle of the case surrounded by clothes for impact protection

TBH, weight is likely to be the problem so unless the kit lens is absolute carp, I would take that rather than the significantly heavier 24-70. The 6mm of extra width at the wide end wold probably come in handy and I doubt that low light will be much of a problem in Malta. I stick anything non fragile in the hold luggage (tripod, other support(s), charger etc.) and take the cameras and lenses as hand baggage.

Yes..always in the hold.

I your hand luggage, with all your camera gear, is going to be too big or heavy for airline, consider getting a photographers waist coat and putting gear in the pockets. In mine I can easily get 2 Full frame cameras and 3 lenses, along with accessories. Put your empty camera bag in your hold luggage ,you can put clothes in it so you don't lose space. You will need camera bag while you are away as it will be far easier than continuing to use waist coat. Also you wont look so daft;) You can get a photographers jacket on Amazon for about 20£
