Going 35mm!

In these modern times with digital and whatnot I've been thinking of upgrading to 35mm film:p
I have a 400D at the minute but I was thinking of getting a 35mm body as I enjoy film photography and the results from it. A second hand Canon EOS1000N or 1000FN can be had for buttons but it'll only be worth my while getting one if it will work with my lenses. Am I right in saying that Canon EF lenses will work but EF-S lenses won't?

I have the following lenses:
Canon 17-40mm f4 L
Canon 70-200mm f4 L
Canon 50mm f1.8
Canon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens.

Am I right in thinking that they'll all work with an EOS1000N/FN apart from the 18-55mm?

Also, out of the following, providing they'll all be compatible with my lenses, which would be best? Any other bodies I should consider?
Canon EOS 1000N
Canon EOS 1000FN
Canon EOS 5

Thanks :)

BTW, Nikon isn't an option so don't start :p

Yes you are correct in saying only the kit lens wont work.

Eos 5 is the best of those listed.

Also consider

Eos 3
Eos 1
Eos 1N
Eos 1V
Eos 1VHS

A quick search on the Canon or Google site will give you all relevant details

Excellent, thank you :)
The EOS5 seems to be able to be picked up for about £70, BARGAIN!

One more thing, will these cameras work with the Canon 430EX flashgun?

It makes a lot of sense to have a film body compatible with modern lenses. :)

As an ex Nikon user (don't spread it around!) I have no clue about Canon film bodies what's the best pro film body to go for?

the range is some thing like this from top to bottom

Eos 1V , 1VHS, 1VRS
Eos 1N, 1NHS
Eos 1
Eos 3
Eos 5

then i'm not too sure for the rest.

Canon transfered all their numbering from film bodies to Digital, But changed the V, HS etc for D mk 1,2,3 etc.

I think all EX flashguns are compatable with all Eos bodies but i'm not 100%. the EZ series is film bodies only.

Thanks Mark.

I can't help with the flashgun bit either. I do know that modern Canon flashguns have a very low trigger voltage so you have to be wary of using older flashguns which use higher voltages. I'd have thought guns as recent as the EX range would be compatible but I'd check it out first.

The lens with a "red dot" at the lens mount will work, one with "white dot" won't.

Red = EF
White = EF-S

Putting a EF-S lens on a EF camera will likely result in damaging the mirror as the rear element goes in deeper than a EF lens.

p.s. Try to track down an EOS 5, it can be had for penuts too, and much better camera plus it'll give you an idea what a pro series body feels like. You WILL fall love with that viewfinder, I guarantee you that.

The EOS 3 would be good but I wouldn't spent that much for a film camera, another one to consider is the EOS 30 (Elan 7E in the US). It's what the 10D/20D/30D body was based on, it's relatively new in terms of film cameras, certainly the last semi pro one before DSLR came along. You can even try out eye control too, a feature yet to be on any of Canon's DSLR.

lol - just seen this same thread over at OcUK. With almost the exact same replies in it. From the same people.

You had to give the game away didn't you?

We were getting childish pleasure from cutting and pasting. :D

Which reminds me...

Apparently, I read somewhere that the Eos3 is worth spending the money on if you want to experience the glorious 45 point AF. ;)

I'm going to break the trend of cutting and pasting...

I've just ordered an EOS 30 with the BP-300 battery grip. It should be with me some time next week so I'll report back with my thoughts after I've had a play.

This eye control feature sounds damn good, I can't wait to try it out! :woot:

I wish I hadn't looked at this thread now. After a scout round the net I'm really liking that EOS3 .

Canon 1V is where its at film wize, its what the 1D / 1Ds is based on. I have used one a few times and they are superb.

Eos 3 is nice too but not up to the 1 series handling

* goes off to check out the 1V*

Go on.

It's a nice tough little camera. The only things wrong with it are.

1) Eye control on the EOS 3 is a bit hit and miss for many even after extensive calibration. Luckily it doesn't bother me and I leave it switched off.

2) It's flippin' noisy! But at least it sounds like a proper SLR rather than that odd dull no film advancing dull thudding of my 30D. :D

Yeah thanks Mark - just seen the price. :D

My 550EX works perfectly with my 30D and EOS 30. I expect the 430EX would work, it's not that dissimilar to the 420EX.

Yeah thanks Mark - just seen the price. :D

Luckily, 2nd hand EOS3s go for less than £280 depending on condition and there's not lot in it really for us mere mortals between it and the 1V. It still makes my 30D feel like a toy! It has the same 45 point AF as the 1V but a lower 4.3FPS. The weather sealing isn't as good on the EOS3 and it's also lighter than the 1V. :) Although the shooting data from the 1 series would be nice.

I managed to get lucky and find a new EOS3 for £300. :D

Yep - just been checking 'em out on the bay. I have a mint A1 kit, I'm only really hanging onto for sentimental reasons. I might have to think about dropping it for a body I can use with my EF lenses. I might actually shoot some film now and again then.

£300 ??? That's a bargain !!! !!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!

Just a bit. :woot:

Got it from the bay.. It was described as secondhand, but when it turned up it was untouched. Card in the film transport, sealed manual, bagged bits and bobs, totally unused! I was running around the house like a grinning idiot for at least an hour!

Yeah thanks Mark - just seen the price. :D

Usually between £400-£650 secondhand depending if its the 1V or 1VHS

Dont they look good together, a 500mm f4 L IS USM on one and a 100-400 f4-5.6 L IS USM on the other, those birds wont stand a chance.

LOL. Shouldn't you be in bed?

I had similar ideas to Scuzi over a year ago now. I bought an EOS 50 for £30! Fully compatible with all my lenses, at the time. I wanted to play with real black and white a bit more. I've got some lovely Ilford 3200 just waiting to be processed. For the price of the kit now its well worth doing by anyone.

You could but I doubt somehow that you will. After years of the ease of digi I think you'd need some BIG film to really make it tempting. ;)

The EOS1 cameras are just the business but as has been said, the 3 is a great camera too and the 5 is far far from being any kind of slouch. I used to shoot running events with a guy that had a pair of EOS1's when I had my 5 and never got a lower hit rate. It really is a very capable camera.

I suspect you're absolutely right - I've been in love with the whole idea of digital since the early days when cameras and printers didn't really begin to hack it. The idea appeals, but it would probably be just another dust gatherer. :suspect:

If I ever going to shoot film again, it'll only be Slides (to tell real men from the boys :p) or B&W (for that nostalgia factor). I don't see any point shooting any Colour negative, there isn't anything I can't do with digital that a Colour Negative can do.

As a recap for anyone who's read this thread and thought "hmmm!" Canon's model numbering for film cameras works roughly like this:

The fewer zero's there are after the leading number, the better the camera is. So:
A 1 is better than a 10, which is better than a 100, which is better than a 1000.
A five is better than a 50, which is better than a 500, and so on.

The "lower" the leading number, the better the camera, so 1 is the top level, then 3, 5 etc.

I intend to take my old 500N with me on holiday this year - once I've got that 12-24mm I'll be hankering after using the full potential of it! I'll probably only run some dirt cheap colour film that I've got kicking about through it, but that'll do for me!

I've been very tempted by an EF mount film body for ages, The 1V's look very tempting but I know it will only make my 20D feel like a toy so then I would need to upgrade to a 1D :p

I almost sold my EOS5 when I got a 300D. I quickly realised that it wasn't worth much and also that it was a much better camera than the 300D! This prompted me to not only upgrade to a 5D:D but also to start taking transparencies again (also prompted by joining the local camera club). So now I have the best of both worlds - I can take loads of digital shots and pp to my hearts content and when I come across a gorgeous landscape and great light I can run thru a roll of Fuji Velvia and then grin when I see the results.

Just a quick update, My EOS 30 and battery grip arrived today along with a tonne of other equipment. I'm already half way through a roll of film, I'll post some of my first pics up in a couple of days :)

I absolutely LOVE the full frame viewfinder. My 17-40 f4L is like a whole new lens :D

You now have a WIDE angle lens, its one reason i won't get and EF-S lenses since i know the future is FF.

What other equipment did you get with it?

I got the battery grip and a few rolls of film. I also bought the Canon 430EX flashgun, an Optech pro strap, a Canon E1 handstrap and a Sandisk Extreme III 2Gb CF card.

That now means beans on toast until the end of the month!

Congrats :D Gotta love full frame, but don't use it too much or you'll just hate your 1.6x model :D
