Yes
ok, my site (which is in dire need of a makeover) was made and hosted with godaddy. The domain was registered through them too. It's up for renewal in 3 months.

I have had an email saying that if I don't renew, I lose my website and domain and email.

My questions are,

If I don't renew with them, is it possible to move my domain to another hosting firm and just carry on as I am.

Can I take my site with me?

Have you done anything like this?

To be honest, I am not too worried about the site, but I would like to keep my domain as it is starting to get a little traffic as word of mouth spreads.

It's all linked to Facebook and twitter too.

Am I making a lot of work for myself, should I just cough up to godaddy again and perhaps just build a new site with them?

I'd rather have my new site built before I take the old one down.

Any comments or experiences shared would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks.

I have used 1&1 for a decade or more and as these companies go they are pretty good, answer the phone, offer support, reasonably easy to use.

Tsohost offer a free website migration service for new customers if your not too sure on what to do so you can transfer everything to tsohost (if you were to choose them), I've used the service for a relative of mines for their website and it was hassle free. Great customer service, drop them a email to find out your needs.

1&1 I do not recommend.
Terrible slow/overprovisioned shared hosting etc.

TSO have always been reasonable.
Pickaweb too have always been reasonable too.
