Setting aside the advert that does my head in, has anyone achieved significant savings on car insurance using the Go Compare website?

Does giving contact details result in being pestered by sales staff?

if i remember rightly you get pestered by the individual insurance companies (often within about 5mins if you go compare during the day. just give a false mobile number to illiminate that and change it if you decide to go with a particular company.

savings wise theres not very much in it betweenconfusedthemarketcompare etc sites, it does save the trawling but i use it solely to workout which companies may be slightly cheaper then go to them direct.

Thanks for that. More or less confirms what I thought may be the case.

More companies seem to be ditching compare type sites and of those that still use them you'd be surprised how many are actually the same insurer BISL in disguise.

If you give your phone number then they will phone you back. They then ask if their quote was ant good and offer o beat the best one given so it's all mainly b*ll*x.

Because of their infuriating ads, I wouldn't even use them to get a vague idea of costs. I have used the other lot with the very slightly less annoying ads to get a ballpark figure. Once I had discovered that the sum was not too extortionate, I phoned the insurers for the other car (e-sure) who hadn't quoted on the comparison site and got the insurance for considerably less than the cheapest quote compare the fluffy animals came up with. I never put a phone number into web forms unless I really have to (and then I seem to make trypos...) to avoid sales calls - if a company does get through to me without me supplying the number, I speak to a supervisor and tell them that as a result of them calling, they have guaranteed that theyt will NOT get my business.

The ads have the same effect on me. Utterly sick of them, TBH.
Just thought it would be rash to miss out on a good saving because of a poxy ad.
However, looks like they don't have a lot to offer.

I've never tried Go Compare. The ad drives me bl***y nuts.
I have tried one of the others though and they have never been able to beat my current insurance supplier - Direct Line Insurance.

If you're just getting quotes, just give them a false telephone number and house number (although make sure you give the correct post code, as this can affect insurance costs)

As others have said, I wouldn't touch Go Compare because of those infuriating adverts. Having recently left Direct Line because several of their call centre operators lied to me over different issues in order to try and fob me off. My complaint was upheld and I wouldn't trust that organisation again. My options are dwindling :D

I saved almost 50% on building and contents insurance using comparison websites, although not specifically the go compare site. I was insured through Lloyds-TSB and made the classic mistake of just letting it run year on year on year. And of course every year it went up. I think it was three years ago that I decided that it was looking a bit expensive, and had a look around. I got exactly the same amount of cover for just over half the price.

I compare every year now. Not just insurance, but energy and anything else I can think of. Yes, I do sometimes get annoying follow up phone calls, but it's worth that. And I'm quite happy to tell them that they're too expensive or whatever other reason I've changed for.

I agree Bill, you need to be proactive and source the best deal annually, even with your existing company.

I have used confused.com a few times, saved quite a lot and not been pestered by phone calls, just the odd e-mail :)
